RED DEER \u2013 <\/strong>The Red Deer Rebels are proud to announce that Beckett Hamilton has been named the club\u2019s captain for the 2026-27 season.<\/p>\n

The Saskatoon, SK native becomes the 30th<\/sup> captain in team history.<\/p>\n

Hamilton just completed his second season with the Rebels and finished as the team\u2019s leading scorer with 62 points in 67 games, earning him Rebels Most Valuable Player honours.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m fully focused on coming to Red Deer next year and hopefully make a huge push in the playoffs and see what we can do,\u201d said Hamilton.<\/p>\n

“He’s an outstanding kid and a very good hockey player. He’s thrilled to come back next year, and we’re thrilled to have him as our captain,” said Rebels Owner, President and General Manager Brent Sutter.<\/p>\n

Hamilton is eligible for the 2026 NHL Draft and is currently ranked 76th<\/sup> among North American Skaters by NHL Central Scouting. He competed at the WHL Prospects Game in February.<\/p>\n

Hamilton was selected by the Rebels in round one, 18th<\/sup> overall at the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

By DANNY RODE – <\/strong>Red Deer Rebels head coach Marc Habscheid takes a lot of pride in what he saw from his young team this season and into the playoffs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe guys gave us everything they had and that\u2019s all you can ask against a good team,\u201d he said during a year-end media scrum.<\/p>\n

The Rebels, who are the youngest team in the league with three 20-year-olds and no 19-year-olds, lost the best-of-seven series to the top-seeded Prince Albert Raiders, losing the fifth game in overtime.<\/p>\n

\u201cOutside of two periods (in the entire series) we were right there with them. The guys worked their tails off to prepare both mentally and physically. It was a real together group and did what we asked of them.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re young and experience is the always the greatest teacher. We learned a lot in this playoff series and we hung in there. If we get a bounce (in that final overtime) and we\u2019re back here (for Game 6).\u201d<\/p>\n

Habscheid and the Rebels held their exit meetings Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a tight group. We held our exit meetings, and they all said how tight there were and that\u2019s what you need to be a successful team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Habscheid saw a lot over his initial season with the Rebels, taking over a rebuilding team last September that went through a myriad of midseason changes with veterans traded away and talented youngsters brought in.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a big change at the deadline with 12 different guys coming in, but it was fun. At the time it was like a meet and greet in the dressing room. But the guys did a good job, especially the leadership group of getting the guys together, getting them on the same page.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen just after we were out to B.C. There was a lot going on in a short period of time and it evolved into a close-knit group. We worked to get them better and to grow as a group. We made it into the playoffs and made some noise, although we would have liked to make some more.\u201d<\/p>\n

Habscheid liked what he saw from a team that had 11 17-year-olds, seven 18-year-olds and a 16-year-old on the roster.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re young but their attitude is the biggest thing for me and these guys, individually and collectively, have that. They all pulled in the same direction. They care about one another. There were a lot of tears in that room today because they are leaving and that\u2019s what\u2019s important. You\u2019d be worrying if there wasn\u2019t, but there was as they care about one another. It\u2019s a good group, a talented group.\u201d<\/p>\n

Habscheid has worked with a number of young teams over his coaching career and can tell when he has a team that will continue to evolve.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey kept stepping forward and we\u2019re on the cusp of something good here.\u201d<\/p>\n

And Habscheid wants to be part of it.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbsolutely. It\u2019s a great place to be and I like working with the youth. They\u2019re impressionable and a lot of fun. Personally, I see the three overages leave and it\u2019s tough as you get close to them as a coach.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are special but that\u2019s a way of life in junior. Three move on and the young guys move up and take on different roles and responsibilities and that\u2019s the fun part of coaching this age group.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

By DANNY RODE – <\/strong>There were a few tears, then again there always will be when players are leaving a team for the last time.<\/p>\n

Saturday was just one of those days for the three 20-year-old members of the Red Deer Rebels.<\/p>\n

Captain Talon Brigley, along with Tyson Yaremko and Aleksey Chichkin, cleared out their lockers for the last time and said goodbye to a group of friends they will always be close to.<\/p>\n

For Brigley it was extra tough as the Rebels where the only team he knew during his five-year Western Hockey League career.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is definitely harder than most years for sure,\u201d he said. \u201cBut the meetings have been good, hanging out with the guys, just being around the rink, talking with the coaches and hanging out with Mikey (dressing room attendant Mikel McIver). All the fun stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brigley can now take time to look back over his career.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s meant so much to me, coming in as a 16-year-old to now. I\u2019ve learned so much. I\u2019m a different person than I was back then. Even this year with Habby (head coach Marc Habscheid) and the wisdom he has and shared with us. I\u2019ve learned so much from him. He\u2019s given me confidence to be the person I want to be, the leader I want to be. I will take that with me forever. I owe this organization everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

And the organization owes Talon a lot as well. He gave everything he had from day one, hardly missing a game, setting a pair of records for longevity by playing 329 regular season games and 365 regular season and playoff games.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s special,\u201d he agreed. \u201cI never thought that would happen, playing that many games for this organization. It\u2019s something I will look back on in the future, it\u2019s a special milestone. The past five years went by so fast it really never hit me until now. But it\u2019s special to be here the past five years and this year I\u2019m so honoured to be captain and lead these guys. It\u2019s something I\u2019ll never forget.\u201d<\/p>\n

As he leaves Talon does have some final words for a talented group of younger players remaining.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy advice to them is to work as hard as they can. We have simple rules here. To be good teammates, to work hard as you can and to treat others how you want to be treated. It\u2019s the culture we have.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not hard to find those guys when they come in. They learned quick that this is the way it is and every guy is an unreal human and I think they will have success in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Talon\u2019s future, starting next year, will be at Sacred Heart University, an independent Catholic Division I school in Fairbank, Ct.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s something I\u2019m looking forward to for sure,\u201d he said. \u201cGetting out of Red Deer will be new for me. I\u2019m excited and the change of scenery will be fun. I\u2019ll be playing in a new league against older guys and I\u2019m excited to see what the competition is like. I will miss this place and these guys but I\u2019m excited for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Talon will always have his memories.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are too many to even say,\u201d he said. \u201cOne of the biggest was coming to a game when I was a kid. I still remember where we sat. My dad had season tickets he got from work, and we\u2019d come to as many games as we could. It was surreal for me to put the jersey on. I never took it for granted.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor it to be over is sad, but I\u2019ve been fortunate to be here for five years and meet the people I have and the friendships will be forever. What I\u2019ve learned from the staff, from Brent (Sutter) and my teammates will be with me for the rest of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both Yaremko and Chichkin came to the Rebels in trades this season and have nothing but good things to say about the club.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been awesome, just getting to know the players,\u201d said Yaremko, who came over from the Portland Winterhawks at the trade deadline. Prior to that he had played one game with the Swift Current Broncos.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think going on the bus trips and hanging our with the guys were the best,\u201d he said. \u201cYou take it for granted that you don\u2019t want to do it, but it\u2019s the best part of junior hockey. Just that experience on the bus for many hours. I was on three different teams and met so many guys coming in and out and it was unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a difference between Portland and Red Deer.<\/p>\n

\u201cPortland is a bigger city, a longer drive with a lot of traffic,\u201d he said. \u201cThe fans were great, although a little less on the hockey side. Here it\u2019s nice. More hockey culture in a Canadian city. Here we\u2019re closer to the rink and it\u2019s a little colder but it\u2019s been great.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yaremko will attend the University of Alaska \u2013 Fairbanks next season. He feels this year prepared him for that next step in his career.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a tough year last year because of injuries and had a couple of injuries toward the end of this year but I\u2019m ready to go play Div I. Have a great summer to rehab my injuries and be ready for next year.<\/p>\n

He has been in contact with the university throughout the year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey kept in touch, keeping up to date. I\u2019m excited.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chichkin came to the Rebels from Prince George early in the season, giving the Rebels valuable experience on the blueline.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been unreal here. Great spot anyone would love coming here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chichkin played three years in the league, collecting a few different hats along the way. He played a season with the Calgary Hitmen, then split last year between the Regina Pats and Prince George Cougars and then this season.<\/p>\n

He enjoyed every minute in the league.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe league has given me so much,\u201d he said. \u201cMore than I could ever hoped. Look where I was when I was 16 to where I am today. I\u2019m so happy to be part of those teams and the chances the coaches took on me.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s unbelievable to sit here today and look back. I learned something from every place and I\u2019m thankful to everyone.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday is a tough day. The coaches poured so much into me … took, a chance on me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aleksey came to Red Deer looking to be someone who was tough to play against.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was my goal,\u201c he said. \u201cWhen I first saw you guys (media) the first day I was traded here I said I wanted to be the toughest guy to play against and I thought I did that throughout the season. I think I had a great year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aleksey was to join Mercyhurst University next season, but he was told on the first day of the playoffs that they dropped their men\u2019s hockey program.<\/p>\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t really thought about it, haven\u2019t had much time,\u201d he said. \u201cThe coaches have been talking to some schools for me so I will figure it out in the next couple of days and get into it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s also hoping to get a pro tryout.<\/p>\n

\u201cHope so. I had a good season so I\u2019ll see what comes of it.<\/p>\n

One thing he can add to his resume is leadership.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a young group and I\u2019m real proud of the way this group responded. There\u2019s a lot of younger guys who will have a good future and I\u2019m proud of that.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
