Rebels hold off Broncos for second-straight road win
The Red Deer Rebels most certainly aren’t going down without a fight.
Wednesday night was case in point as the Rebels earned a hard fought 3-2 regulation time win in Swift Current to prevent the Broncos from clinching the final playoff spot in the WHL Eastern Conference.
STATS STORY
Doogan Pederson (RD) – 1 goal, 1 assist
Brett Calhoon (RD) – game winning goal
Peyton Shore (RD) – 20 saves
HOW IT HAPPENED
An evenly matched first period saw Red Deer escape with the lead thanks to Peyton Shore’s excellent work on the penalty kill, making several big saves, followed by Jaxon Fuder’s go-ahead goal with under five minutes to play. Fuder’s 10th goal of the season was his first since January 3 and since missing 14 games to injury.

Red Deer controlled much of the second period, doubling Swift Current’s shot output in the second and outscoring the Broncos, first thanks to Doogan Pederson’s second goal as a Rebel on a one-timer from the right faceoff circle.

Brett Calhoon capitalized on a powerplay opportunity less than four minutes later, recovering the puck off a forecheck by Gleb Semenov and finding the top corner past Broncos netminder Reid Dyck from just outside the crease. The goal came with just one second remaining in a penalty to former Rebels blue liner Hunter Mayo.

Rookie Otto Hanson got Swift Current on the board late in the second, and after Clarke Caswell scored early in the third on a two-man power play, Red Deer held strong for the final 17 minutes to nail down their one-goal win.
Red Deer outshot Swift Current 29-22 and was 1-for-2 on the power play while the Broncos were 1-for-3.
