Rebels blanked in Edmonton
The Red Deer Rebels were unable to build on the success of their Saturday night home win over the Victoria Royals as they were blanked 5-0 by the Edmonton Oil Kings at Rogers Place on Sunday.
It’s the third loss for the Rebels in as many games this season versus Edmonton, who move past Red Deer into seventh place in the WHL Eastern Conference.
STATS STORY
Alex Worthington (EDM) – 26 save shutout
Gracyn Sawchyn (EDM) – 1 goal, 2 assists
Gavin Hodnett (EDM) – 1 goal, 2 assists
Chase Wutzke (RD) – 29 saves
HOW IT HAPPENED
Edmonton struck for the first period’s only goal as Gracyn Sawchyn launched Rogers Place’s Teddy Bear Toss festivities with 5:09 left in the frame.
A Marshall Finnie net drive in the second period caused all kinds of havoc around the Rebels crease. Joe Iginla fired the loose puck past a displaced Chase Wutzke to double the Oil Kings lead. The goal was initially waved off by the officials due to contact between Finnie and Wutzke before the officials met and decided to allow Iginla’s tally to stand.
Edmonton covered on a powerplay of their own later in the second with St. Louis Blues pick Adam Jecho extending the lead to 3-0.
Lukas Sawchyn and Gavin Hodnett’s late third-period goals cementing Red Deer’s fate as the Rebels failed to score for the second time in three games bookending Saturday’s seven-goal explosion versus Victoria.
Steven Steranka had one of Red Deer’s best scoring chances when he was awarded a penalty shot in the second period, but was denied by Worthington.
Edmonton outshot Red Deer 34-27 and was 2-for-4 on the power play while the Rebels were 0-for-3.
The Oil Kings with their third-straight win improve to 11-10-1-1 for 24 points on the season while the Rebels fall to 10-10-1-2 for 23 points.
