Andersen delivers Rebels another overtime win, 4-3 over Lethbridge
RED DEER – Sockey Day in Red Deer in support of United Way Central Alberta brought the energy on Family Day weekend as the Rebels dug deep and skated away with a 4-3 overtime victory in a back-and-forth battle with the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Sunday.
Poul Andersen was the overtime hero for the second-straight time. Matej Mikes, Matus Lisy and Patrick Sopiarz provided the regulation-time offence. Matthew Kondro was solid yet again to secure his 14th win of the season.
With the victory, Red Deer’s playoff push rolls on as their record improves to 21-28-2-2 for 46 points. The Rebels now sit seventh in the WHL Eastern Conference standings, one clear of both the Regina Pats and the Moose Jaw Warriors.
Stats Story:
Matej Mikes (RD) – 1 goal, 2 assists
Poul Andersen and Matus Lisy (RD) – 1 goal, 1 assist
Matthew Kondro (RD) – 29 saves, win
Koen Cleaver (LETH) – 45 saves
How it Happened:
Matej Mikes broke the ice early after Cameron Kuzma dialed up a textbook setup. From the bottom of the circle, Kuzma spotted Mikes driving into the high slot. Mikes did the rest, wiring it past Hurricanes’ netminder, Koen Cleaver, to give Red Deer the 1-0 jump.

The Rebels doubled their lead about six minutes later as Matus Lisy fired a puck toward the net that caught a piece of a Hurricanes defender and found twine, earning Lisy the credit and Red Deer the 2-0 edge.
Lethbridge pushed back late in the opening frame. Grady Pichette tracked down a loose puck and snapped it past Matthew Kondro to cut the Rebels’ lead in half heading into the break.
The second period saw the Hurricanes draw even. A quick exchange up top led to Kayden Longley burying the tying goal, the lone marker of the middle frame, setting the stage for a tense third.
Momentum swung back to Red Deer when Lisy once again made his presence felt. His point shot found Patrick Sopiarz at the net front, where his tip-in restored the Rebels lead.

With a late snap shot, the Hurricanes’ Owen Berge forced overtime, sending the contest to bonus hockey.
The Rebels had three minutes of power play time to start the extra frame. And on the seventh shot of the man advantage, Andersen picked up a loose rebound to send it past Cleaver to give Red Deer another crucial two points.
