Tyrone Sobry: defenceman turned temporary forward
With a bit of a depleted lineup with a couple of forwards out due to injury, the Prince Albert Raiders had to figure out a way to dress 12 forwards against the Regina Pats last night. The alternate option would be to dress seven defenceman and only have 11 forwards, but head coach Jeff Truitt thought differently, as he put blueliner Tyrone Sobry at left wing on the fourth line.
That decision paid off, as Sobry scored Prince Albert’s first goal of the game in the second period, en route to a 5-1 win at the Brandt Centre.
“I think the biggest difference is just the way you think the game,” Sobry said about making the switch from defence to forward. “As a d-man, you’re more back in your own end and you know what you have to do on the defensive side of the puck. Moving up to forward, I’ve never been much of an offensive guy. Playing left wing, I had to think a whole lot differently.”
Sobry scored his second goal of the season last night, and his third of his WHL career. He looked pretty comfortable doing so, as he buried a rebound in the low slot area, which gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead with his fourth line going to work in the offensive zone.

“Honestly, I was told by my linemates to just go to the net,” Sobry laughed. “The puck happened to bounce in a perfect spot for me, and I just whacked at it and it went in. Just changing my mindset to think offensively helped me last night.”
With the win last night, the Raiders started their first winning streak of the season at two games. They’ll look to push that to three games on Friday night at home against the Swift Current Broncos. Puck drops at 7pm.
