Raiders fall 9-4 to Broncos
The Prince Albert Raiders saw their win streak come to an end at two games, as they fell 9-4 to the Swift Current Broncos on Friday night.
The first period was controlled by the Broncos, as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes. Just 1:46 into the game, Brady Birnie gave Swift Current the early lead, followed by a goal from Clarke Caswell at the 4:59 mark to make it 2-0.
Less than three minutes later, Sawyer Dingman scored, giving the Broncos a 3-0 lead 7:36 into the first. Birnie added his second goal of the game with 5:13 left in the opening frame to open up a four goal lead. The Raiders called their 30 second timeout, as a talk from head coach Jeff Truitt was needed to try and right the ship.
The Raiders weren’t able to get on the board in the first after the timeout, and went into the second period trailing 4-0, while being outshot 17-13.
The Raiders got on the board 51 seconds into the second period, as Aiden Oiring scored on a powerplay that carried over from the first. Oiring took a pass from Niall Crocker and ripped a one timer past Reid Dyck to make it a 4-1 game.
The Broncos would respond to that with four straight goals to go up 8-1. Former Raider captain Eric Johnston scored at the 4:10 mark to make it a 5-1 game. Birnie completed his hat trick at the 8:14 mark of the frame, which saw Max Hilebrand’s night come to an end, as Cooper Anderson came in relief in a 6-1 game.
Carlin Dezainde scored twice 13 seconds apart, stretching the Broncos lead to 8-1.
Ty Meunier scored late for the Raiders, as he made it an 8-2 game with 2:25 left in the second period, and that would be the score heading into the third.
Brayden Dube and Niall Crocker scored back to back for the Raiders in the third period. Dube used his speed to break into the Broncos zone and beat Dyck five hole. Crocker’s goal came on the powerplay, when he smacked a puck in the slot past Dyck to make it an 8-4 game.
Caswell rounded out the scoring in the game, adding his second goal of the night for the Broncos, giving Swift Current a 9-4 win.
The Raiders are back in action on Tuesday night in Regina.
