Late goal gives Rebels 2-1 win over Raiders
The Prince Albert Raiders pushed the Red Deer Rebels to the limit on Saturday night, but a goal with 1:37 left in regulation by the Rebels was a heartbreaking one for the green and gold, as they fell 2-1 at Peavey Mart Centrium.
The Rebels took a 1-0 lead 7:06 into the first period, but it took an overturned call on a video review to do so. After a shot from the slot was stopped by Max Hildebrand, Kalan Lind crashed the net and made contact with the Raider netminder. Hildebrand’s left pad was pushed towards the goal line, with the puck trickling into the net. The call on the ice was no goal, after the referee waved it off for goalie interference, and a long video review ensued. After looking at the goal and having a discussion on the ice, the call was overturned, and Lind was credited with the goal for the Rebels, scoring his seventh of the season to make it a 1-0 game.
That would be the only goal of the first period, with both teams failing to score on one powerplay try each in the first period.
The Raiders fought back to tie the game in the second period with a powerplay goal. After a shot from Jacob Hoffrogge at the point was stopped by Chase Wutzke, the rebound popped in front of the net. Pouncing on it was Aiden Oiring, who buried the rebound to score his ninth goal of the season. Snapping a 23 game goal-less drought, Oiring’s goal was the only one in the second period, as it was a 1-1 deadlock heading into the third period.
In the third period, it looked like the game was heading to overtime, but the Rebels scored a goal with 1:37 left in regulation to take a late 2-1 lead. Ollie Josephson picked off a pass in the neutral zone and worked his way into the Raider zone. Using a defenceman as a screen, Josephson sniped a shot past Hildebrand, giving Red Deer a one goal advantage in the late stages of the game.
Prince Albert didn’t have a comeback in them, as they dropped their fourth straight game to fall to 19-22-0-3 on the season. The Raiders wrap up their weekend road trip tomorrow night in Calgary. Puck drop is 5pm Sask time.
