Harvey scores hat trick, tallies six points in Prince Albert’s 11-0 win over Warriors
It was the Ben Harvey show on Friday night at the Art Hauser Centre. The rookie winger scored his first career hat trick and added three assists, as the Prince Albert Raiders sailed to an 11-0 win over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors.
The Raiders got off to a quick start, as they opened the scoring just 3:26 into the contest. Right off a faceoff win in the offensive zone, Ben Harvey poked the puck to the slot for Maddix McCagherty, who zipped a shot glove side past Chase Wutzke. It was his 19th goal of the season, putting Prince Albert up 1-0.
Prince Albert outshot Moose Jaw 17-5 in the first, with McCagherty’s tally being the only one after 20 minutes. While he wasn’t tested much in the first frame, Michal Orsulak had to come up huge, as he turned aside a breakaway chance that would have tied the game around the midway point of the period.
The second period was an offensive onslaught from the Raiders, as they put up six goals to jump ahead 7-0. Daxon Rudolph struck on a powerplay 3:58 into the period, taking a great feed from Aiden Oiring and cashing in his 28th of the season. The goal tied Rudolph with Josh Morrissey for the most goals by a Raiders defenceman in a single season.
21 seconds later, Ben Harvey found the back of the net to make it a 3-0 game. Linden Burrett sent a long stretch pass ahead to McCagherty, who collected the puck down the left wing. Spinning around, McCagherty gave a pass to Harvey, who found it between his feet and torched a shot past Wutzke.
With 13:01 left in the period, Alisher Sarkenov scored a gorgeous goal to make it 4-0. Jonah Sivertson forced a turnover in the neutral zone, and turned the play back into the Warriors zone. It was a two on two rush, and Sivertson was able to feed Sarkenov on the tape with a pass in the left circle. Cutting in front to the right post, Sarkenov tucked a backhand shot along the ice just past an oustretched Wutzke. The import winger picked up his 19th goal of the season off the terrific play between himself and Sivertson.
Prince Albert scored again on the powerplay, this time with 10:32 left in the second. The chemistry on the man advantage was unreal, as Max Heise was set up for his 27th of the year. Braeden Cootes gave Brock Cripps a pass at the top, and he sent the puck to the left wing for Rudolph. Rudolph quickly sent the puck back to Cootes in the slot, who then sent it over to Heise in the left circle. Locked and loaded, Heise unleashed a heavy one timer that Wutzke had no chance on, as it hit the back of the net. That would bring an end to Wuzke’s night, as he was replaced by Kyle Jones after surrendering five goals on 24 shots.
With 9:13 left on the clock in the second, Harvey added his second goal of the period. Skating down the right wing after taking a pass from McCagherty, Harvey cut to the middle of the ice and deposited a backhand shot five hole past Jones to make it a 6-0 Raider lead.
For good measure, Prince Albert added one more goal in the second to take an even more commanding 7-0 lead. This time, it was Harvey setting McCagherty up. Harvey forced a turnover in the Moose Jaw zone in the left circle, stripping the puck and sending a nifty pass down low for McCagherty. All alone in the low slot, McCagherty skated in and beat Jones five hole with a backhand shot, scoring his second of the night.
With 40 minutes in the books, the Raiders were comfortable in the driver seat, as they took a 7-0 lead into the third.
In the third, the Raiders scored four more goals to win by an 11-0 final. Sivertson, along with Brock Cripps and Braeden Cootes, all scored to put up a 10 spot just past the halfway point of the frame. Then in the final minute, Harvey notched his first career hat trick, taking a pass from Burrett and firing home a one timer from the left circle. That was part of a six point night for Harvey, as the 16-year-old rookie was all over the scoresheet in the win.
Not to be outshone, Orsulak was a beast in the crease, as he stopped all 17 shots he faced for the shutout.
Prince Albert is back in action tomorrow night as they travel to Regina to battle the Pats.
