From golf greens to Raider green: Shingoose reflects on being drafted to Prince Albert
Athens Shingoose didn’t have the most traditional way of finding out he was a WHL draft pick. Most players find themselves glued to the TV screen or constantly refreshing their phone. Meanwhile, Shingoose was spending his day how most hockey players do once their season comes to an end: out with some buddies on the golf course. When his name was called by the Prince Albert Raiders at 16th overall last week, he didn’t even know it at first.
“I was in the clubhouse and my phone was charging, and my buddies told me that I just got drafted,” Shingoose said. “I was emotional, just so excited. I jumped up and was just going all over the place. After that, we started our round and the boys just kept congratulating me. It was just an awesome feeling.”
Shingoose was just one of two players picked from RHA Winnipeg in the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft Presented by Winsor Plywood. The other? Brady Filmon, who the Raiders picked at 62nd overall. Filmon finished second in team scoring behind Shingoose in the 2024-25 season, and is the brother of former Swift Current Bronco and New Jersey Devils prospect, Josh Filmon.
Shingoose talked about the chance to come to training camp, and potentially play together with the Raiders down the road.
“At the end of the year we had been playing together and built so much chemistry,” he explained. “Coming to training camp together will be great.”
A 31 goal, 60 point season saw Shingoose lead RHA Winnipeg in scoring. He scored four hat tricks, and even had a six point game on January 12th against the Notre Dame Hounds U15 Prep team. Finishing fifth in the CSSHL in goal scoring, he described what he thinks he can bring to the WHL.
“I just want to win. My qualities would probably be my shot and my speed, and I’m very strong on my feet. I know I will be a good fit in Prince Albert.”
On the other side of the puck, Shingoose also explained what part of his game he wants to continue to work on.
“It would be the defensive side of the game I think,” he said. “Towards the end of the season I was working on it a lot. I’m going to build so much more on the defensive side and be a great 200-foot player.”
