Fortin stops 34 as Raiders beat Wheat Kings 2-1
It was a low scoring affair on Friday night, but the Prince Albert Raiders got the job done, as they took down the host Brandon Wheat Kings 2-1. The Raiders gave up the first goal of the contest, but scored two straight and played solid defensively the rest of the way.
Brandon got on the board first, scoring with 5:40 left in the first period. A shot at the point from Dylan Ronald was tipped home by Nicholas Johnson, scoring his eighth goal of the season. That goal was Dimitri Fortin’s only blemish of the opening frame, as he stopped 11 of 12 shots through 20 minutes.
Less than one minute later, the Raiders came back to tie the game right back up, as Justice Christensen scored his fifth of the season. Taking a pass in the left circle from Evan Smith, Christensen unleashed a juice bomb, beating Filip Ruzicka glove side. It was the Raider captain’s fifth goal of the season, making it a 1-1 game.

Both sides went 0/1 on the powerplay in the first period, and the score would remain tied heading into the second, with the Wheat Kings holding a 12-9 edge in shots.
After a scoreless second period, Jonah Sivertson broke the tie game open with a nasty goal 2:55 into the third. After the Wheat Kings turned the puck over near their own blue line, Sivertson collected it and led a rush down the left wing. Outwaiting a Brandon defender, Sivertson sidestepped his man, cutting to the front of the net. He outwaited Ruzicka as well, avoiding the pokecheck attempt, and then slid a forehand shot home for his seventh goal of the season to make it a 2-1 game.

From there, the Raiders shut the door, thanks to Fortin making 23 saves in the final 40 minutes of play. The Raiders netminder stopped 34 of 35 shots on the night, picking up his seventh win of the season and first star honours.
The Raiders now have the long bus ride back to Prince Albert, as they get set to host the Medicine Hat Tigers, who beat the Saskatoon Blades 9-3 tonight. Puck drops at the Art Hauser Centre at 7pm.
