RECAP: Pats Fall 3-2 in Nine-Round Shootout in Brandon
Brandon, Man. — The Regina Pats battled back from a two-goal deficit but ultimately fell 3-2 to the Brandon Wheat Kings in a nine-round shootout Friday night at Assiniboine Credit Union Place.
The Wheat Kings took control early, scoring twice in the opening period to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Regina answered in the second when Ellis Mieyette cut the deficit to one with his second goal of the season at 15:51, converting a play set up by Zachary Lansard.
The Pats continued to push in the third and were rewarded early in the frame. Mieyette won a battle at centre ice before Ossi Tukio collected the loose puck and raced in on a two-on-one, ripping a shot past Ryley Budd at 5:13 to tie the game at 2-2. The goal marked Tukio’s first WHL goal.
Neither team could find the winner in the remainder of regulation or overtime, sending the game to a marathon shootout.
In the ninth round, Brandon’s Fayad scored before Regina’s attempt was stopped, giving the Wheat Kings the 3-2 victory.
Despite the loss, Regina controlled much of the play after the opening period, outshooting Brandon 27-14 over the final two periods and overtime. The Pats finished with a 40-23 advantage in shots, with Taylor Tabashniuk making 21 saves on 23 shots.
Mieyette finished the night with a goal and an assist, while Lansard and Tukio also recorded points. Tukio’s goal was his first in the WHL.
