RECAP: Pats Show Valiant Effort in 7-4 Loss To ICE

Regina, Sask. — The Regina Pats showed off a valiant effort in a 7-4 loss to the CHL’s number one ranked Winnipeg ICE in front of a crowd of 6,017 on Saturday inside the Brandt Centre on Cancer Awareness Night.
The Pats had a 1-0 lead after one and a 3-2 lead after two before the ICE completed the comeback with four unanswered goals in the third period. Connor Bedard tallied three points (1G-2A), Brayden Barnett scored his first in 48 games and Sam Oremba tallied his seventh of the season in the loss. Kelton Pyne did all that he could to limit the Winnipeg offence, making 26 saves.
For the ICE, they extended their winning-streak to six straight while playing the second game of their 10 game road trip. Zack Ostapchuk finished with three points (2G-1A) and Matthew Savoie scored twice. Conor Geekie, Connor McClennon and Evan Friesen rounded out the scoring for the ICE. Daniel Hauser improved to 10-0 lifetime against the Pats, making 27 saves.

REG 1-0 at 12:06 — Stanislav Svozil (6), assisted by Connor Bedard // Bedard skated into the ICE zone one-on-three, got the puck to Svozil who fired a nice wrist shot over Hauser’s right shoulder to give the Pats a 1-0 lead.
Second Period
WPG 1-1 at 7:16 — Connor McClennon (36), unassisted // The Pats had a great opportunity to make it a two-goal lead, but they missed the open cage. McClennon raced down the ice and from the left circle he let a wrist shot fly that Pyne got a piece of but not enough and the ICE had the game tied 1-1.
REG 2-1 at 8:04 — Brayden Barnett (1), assisted by Jaxsin Vaughan and Matteo Michels // A huge shift by the Pats’ fourth line resulted in a goal with Michels taking the first shot that was repelled by Hauser. Jaxsin Vaughan had an attempt at the puck but Barnett buried it to give the Pats a 2-1 lead.

REG 3-1 at 12:16 — Connor Bedard (51), unassisted (SH) // While killing a penalty, Bedard went on a solo mission as he carried the puck out of the Pats’ zone, skated into the ICE zone made an amazing deke where he low shot was stopped originally but he was able to sneak the puck past Hauser to give the Pats a 3-1 lead.
WPG 3-2 at 13:42 — Zack Ostapchuk (18), assisted by Ben Zloty // An ICE forward lost the puck and it bounced off a Pats defenceman to Ostapchuk who put a nice shot past Pyne to get the ICE back to within one at 3-2.
Third Period
WPG 3-3 at 1:27 — Evan Friesen (10), assisted by Jonas Woo and Zack Ostapchuk // Woo’s slap shot was kicked out by Pyne but directly to Friesen who buried the puck to get the ICE on even terms at 3-3 early in the third period.
WPG 3-4 at 8:06 — Mathew Savioe (25), unassisted // Savoie’s shot was stopped by Pyne but he could not hang on to the puck and it snuck over the line to give the ICE their first lead of the game at 4-3.
WPG 3-5 at 8:51 — Conor Geekie (24), assisted by Ty Nash // The ICE broke in on a three-on-one, Nash sent a pass to Geekie who deposited it past Pyne to give the ICE a two-goal lead at 5-3.
WPG 3-6 at 15:40 — Zack Ostapchuk (19), assisted by Evan Friesen // A turnover led to a two-on-one and Ostapchuk decided to shoot, and he rifled the puck bar down past Pyne to extend the ICE lead to 6-3.
REG 4-6 at 17:47 — Sam Oremba (7), assisted by Connor Bedard and Tanner Brown (PP) // Bedard’s shot was tipped by Oremba and Past Hauser to get the Pats to within two late in the third period.
WPG 4-7 at 19:46 — Mathew Savoie (26), assisted by Zach Benson (SH-EN) // ICE controlled a defensive zone faceoff and Savoie buried a shot from his own end to seal the game at 7-4.

- Connor Bedard notched a goal and two assists to reach 103 points on the season (51G-52A) which is now a career high. He is the first Pat to have back-to-back 50-goal seasons since Mike Sillinger who had 50 in three-straight seasons (1988-89, 1989-90, and 1990-91). He also has 100 points in back-to-back seasons. He leads the WHL in goals (51), points (103), and shots on goal (273). He has 24 goals, 15 assists, and 39 points in 13 games since coming back from the World Juniors.
- Brayden Barnett scored his first goal of the season and first since December 27, 2021 (48 games).
- Stanislav Svozil scored for the first time since December 9th (13 games) and now has 18 points (1G-17A) in 12 games since returning from the World Juniors.
- Tanner Howe extended his point-streak to four games (2G-5A)
- Connor Bedard was dominant on the faceoff dot, going 29-35 on draws. The Pats won the faceoff department 43-26.
