PREVIEW: Pats head to Estevan for neutral site contest versus Warriors
Regina, Sask. – The Regina Pats continue their pre-season action tonight, playing the first of two straight games against the rival Moose Jaw Warriors in a neutral site venue.
The Pats are in Estevan, Sask. to take on the Warriors inside Affinity Place, which is home to the SJHL’s Estevan Bruins. Tomorrow, the Pats will rematch the Warriors at the Southland Co-op Centre in Assiniboia, Sask.
The last time the Pats played in neutral site was on September 13, 2022 when they defeated the Swift Current Broncos in Estevan, 4-2.
MATCH UP
The Pats reassigned nine players on Thursday following the clubs young guns battle against the Swift Current Broncos. The Pats now have 29 players on their pre-season roster, with four goalies, seven defencemen and 18 forwards. Of those 29 players are 20 returning players from the Pats 2023-24 squad that finished 22-40-4-2 with 50 points.
The Pats are coming off a 8-5 loss to the Swift Current Broncos in their pre-season opener. Mathis Paull scored twice in the first period which gave the Pats a 2-1 lead after the opening frame. The Pats got points from seven different players with multi-point games from Logan Peskett (1G-1A), Cohen Klassen (1G-1A) and Paull (2G). The final shots were 44-28 for the Pats. Regina was 2-6 on their power play while the Broncos were 3-5 on their power play.
Meanwhile, the Moose Jaw Warriors play the first of four pre-season games before their regular season opens on September 20. The Warriors won their first ever WHL Championship last season, sweeping the Portland Winterhawks in the league final. The Warriors then went 1-2-0 in Memorial Cup round-robin play before falling in the semi-final to Saginaw (7-1 L). Moose Jaw finished the regular season with a 44-21-0-3 record with 91 points, and have made the playoffs in each of the last three seasons.
