PREVIEW: Pats and Warriors tangle for third time this week
The Regina Pats (30-24-5-1) are back at it on Sunday afternoon for their third game of the week against the Moose Jaw Warriors (43-10-1-2). Puck drop is at 2 p.m. at the Brandt Centre. The Pats were in Moose Jaw on Friday and beat the Warriors 5-3 to improve to 1-1-0-0 against their division rivals this week. Tonight is the seventh of eight meetings on the season between the Pats and Warriors, Regina holds a 1-4-1-0 record in the season series. The Lead Up: Big third pushes Pats past Warriors Friday
Josh Mahura scored twice as part of a three point third period to lead the Pats past the Moose Jaw Warriors 5-3 on Friday night. The Warriors picked up the lone goal of the first when Jayden Halbgewachs found a loose puck in front and Moose Jaw led 1-0 after one. In the second, the Pats powerplay tied it up as Nick Henry jammed home his 10th. Jesse Gabrielle then gave the Pats the lead with his 10th on a good wrist shot from the slot and it was 2-1. Moose Jaw found a tying goal with five seconds left in the period and it was 2-2 heading to the final period. In the third, the Pats powerplay struck again when Emil Oksanen picked up his 14th to make it 3-2. Then, Josh Mahura would strike twice, his 20th and 21st goals of the year to extend the Pats lead to 5-2. Moose Jaw got one back on the powerplay with eight seconds left but Regina skated away with the 5-3 victory. Josh Mahura led the offence with two goals and an assist, Sam Steel and Cam Hebig picked up two helpers while Max Paddock made 25 saves. The Pats outshot Moose Jaw 36-28, the powerplay was two for four and the penalty kill was one for three.
Head to Head
Tonight is the seventh of eight meetings between the Pats and Warriors, Regina is 1-4-1-0 in the season series. Josh Mahura leads the Pats with five goals and 12 points against Moose Jaw. Cameron Hebig and Sam Steel are next with nine points, while Libor Hajek has seven points. The Warriors are led by Jayden Halbgewachs who has 13 points against Regina, while Tanner Jeannot, Brett Howden and Kale Clague have seven points. With Friday’s win, the Pats jumped into third in the East Division but have since fell back to fourth, a point pack of Brandon. The Warriors lead the entire WHL with 89 points.
Strong Season Series
Pats defenceman Josh Mahura has put up some great numbers in six games against the Warriors this season. The 19-year-old has scored five goals and has seven assists against Moose Jaw. Those 12 points account for 20 per cent of his 60 points through 49 games this season. The signed Anaheim Ducks prospect is currently fourth among all WHL defenceman with his 60 points and is second with 21 goals, two back of the leader David Quenneville of the Medicine Hat Tigers.
