PREVIEW
The Regina Pats continue their six-game U.S. road trip on Friday as they visit the Portland Winterhawks at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. It marks the fifth stop on the road swing for the visitors, who are still searching for their first win of the trip.
Regina enters the contest at 0-4 on the road stretch and is coming off an 8-3 setback on Saturday against Everett. The club surrendered a season-high eight goals in the loss, despite a strong showing on the power play. Goals from Keets Fawcett, Caden Brown and Mathis Paull accounted for the offence, while the power play clicked twice on three opportunities. Matthew Hutchison and Marek Schlenker split time in goal, with Hutchison stopping 18 of 24 shots and Schlenker turning aside 13 of 15. Everett finished with a 39-34 edge in shots and capitalized frequently on the man advantage, going 4-for-5.
Despite the four-game skid, Regina still holds the eighth and final playoff position in the Eastern Conference. Offensively, the club ranks ninth across the Western Hockey League with 90 goals this season.
Portland returns home after a narrow 2-1 loss to Kelowna on Nov. 22, a defeat that snapped a four-game winning streak. Even with the loss, the home side is 4-1 over its last five games and has outscored opponents 26-18 during that stretch. The Winterhawks currently rank eighth in the WHL in goals for with 92.
Recent history favours the hosts. Regina last played in Portland on March 1, 2024, falling 3-0, and has not won in the Rose City since Nov. 24, 2009. The two clubs met most recently on Jan. 11, 2025, with Portland earning a 7-3 win at the Brandt Centre. Overall, Regina is 1-8-1 against Portland dating back to the 2013-14 season.
Portland’s pedigree is well established. The franchise reached the WHL Final a season ago, falling to the Moose Jaw Warriors, then followed it with another deep playoff run in 2024-25. Since relocating from Edmonton in 1976, the Winterhawks have appeared in 13 league finals, capturing three Ed Chynoweth Cup titles and two Memorial Cup championships.
With two games remaining on the trip, Regina will be looking to reset, tighten defensively, and start building momentum as they battle a well-rested and confident opponent on home ice.
