Lethbridge, AB – The Edmonton Oil Kings put up a late fight on Tuesday night in Lethbridge but ultimately fell by a 4-2 score to the Hurricanes at the Enmax Centre.
A scoreless first period between the Oil Kings and Hurricanes wasn’t without its chances for the game’s icebreaker as both Kolby Hay and Harrison Meneghin each came up handful of big saves in the opening 20 minutes.
The Oil Kings ended up outshooting the Hurricanes 11-9 in the period.
In the second period, the Oil Kings carried the play for the majority of it outshooting the Hurricanes by a 16-9 margin but it would be the home side finding the only goal of the frame.
With 2:53 left in the middle stanza, Kash Andresen was able to pinball a puck into the Edmonton net after he was initially robbed by Hay on an odd-man rush. The goal was the first of Andresen’s WHL career.
In the third period, the Hurricanes would build to a 3-0 lead after getting a power play goal from Logan Wormald and an even-strength marker from Hayden Pakkala just past the midway mark of the period.
In the final six minutes, the Oil Kings would put forth a valiant comeback effort after Marc Lajoie fired home his team-leading 16th goal of the year from long range and Gavin Hodnett buried his 10th of the season after a great setup from Gracyn Sawchyn in a two minute span, but that would be as close as Edmonton would get. Pakkala sealed Edmonton’s fate with his second of the game into an empty Oil Kings net.
Hay finished the night making 23 saves, while Meneghin turned in 32. Edmonton went 0-for-5 on the power play, Lethbridge was 1-for-3.
