Calgary, Alta. \u2013<\/strong> The Western Hockey League today announced live streaming of WHL games for the 2026-27 season will shift to YouTube<\/a>, on an interim basis.<\/p>\n

The decision to move the livestreaming of WHL games follows uncertainty regarding the future of Victory+, the WHL\u2019s exclusive livestreaming partner since March 2025.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe WHL\u2019s audience is growing rapidly.\u00a0 We continue to believe that providing easy access to games is of critical value and importance as we look to expand our reach and deliver WHL excitement to our fans,\u201d commented WHL Commissioner Dan Near. \u201cBy moving WHL Regular Season games to YouTube on a short-term basis, we are protecting that access for fans to livestream their favourite WHL Club and watch their favourite WHL stars when the 2026-27 season gets underway Friday, September 18.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over two playoffs and one regular season livestreaming on Victory+, the WHL achieved great success with millions of viewers tuning in, generating unprecedented exposure and reach for WHL Clubs and players, representing a significant step forward in accessibility for fans. WHL Clubs invested in enhancements to their productions, including additional content, intermission programming, camera angles, and more.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we are disappointed to part ways, our time with Victory+ resulted in remarkable growth and exposure for the WHL as a result of the increased accessibility for fans,\u201d Near said. \u201cWHL Clubs pushed forward, investing in their production and exploring new ways to deliver games to fans via our livestreaming product. To this day, we hear accounts from fans who discovered the WHL because of our decision to work alongside Victory+, a company with Western Canadian roots. In today\u2019s changing landscape, accessibility to the product is paramount and we will explore all options to deliver games to WHL fans around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lethbridge, AB –\u00a0<\/strong>The Lethbridge Hurricanes opened the 2026 Pre-Season schedule on Tuesday night falling 5-3 to the Medicine Hat Tigers at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena.<\/p>\n

The Hurricanes began their four-game exhibition schedule dressing a line-up that had a combined 10 WHL games. Of the 20-man roster for Lethbridge, first-year import players Dominick Byrtus, Oliver Sichtar and Oliver Vanha made their Western Hockey League debuts. Cohen Kuntz made the start for the Hurricanes in the game.<\/p>\n

Lethbridge had a strong start to the game as they jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just 4:36 into the game when the hometown product Dawson Spence laid a hit along the end boards before heading to the net and redirecting a point shot over the shoulder of Tigers goaltender Cash Christie to give the ‘Canes the advantage; Nixxon Arcand-Vandale and Evan Cuthbertson picked up the assists on the goal. Medicine Hat pulled even on a power play at the 13:40 mark when Liam Ruck – who dressed alongside his twin brother Markus and their little brother Landon – snapped home his first of three goals in the game to tie the game 1-1; Markus and Kayne Wright earned the helpers on the equalizer as the game was tied 1-1 after twenty minutes of play. The Tigers outshot the Hurricanes 14-13 in the opening period.<\/p>\n

In the second period, the Hurricanes outshot the Tigers 8-3 and generated a plethora of chances, but couldn’t solve Christie in the Medicine Hat net. Both teams exchanged goaltenders at the half-way point of the period as Kuntz – who stopped 13 of 14 shots he faced in the contest – was replaced by 15-year-old Chay Ekblad for Lethbridge while Christie was lifted for Ben Meyer. The Tigers struck early into Ekblad’s tenure in the game as Liam Ruck scored his second on a goal-mouth scramble at the 13:33 mark to make it 2-1; Markus and Burmis picked up the assists. Medicine Hat held the one-goal lead after two periods of play.<\/p>\n

In the opening minute of the third period, the Hurricanes pulled even when Cohen Pentney banged home a loose puck after a miscue behind the goal by netminder Meyer; Oliver Vanha and Oliver Sichtar were credited with the assists on the goal that came just 26-seconds into the period to tie the game 2-2. Just over three minutes later, Sichtar would score a beautiful goal on a two-on-two rush; the Czechia-born forward toe-dragged around a defender before rifling a puck over the blocker of the Tigers goaltender to give the Hurricanes a 3-2 advantage – Reid Soper and local product Tate Serfas were given the assists on the goal. Medicine Hat, however, would strike again courtesy of a Ruck when Markus scored on the power play at the 5:31 mark from Landon Ruck and Burmis to quickly tie the game. With just over three-minutes remaining in regulation, the Tigers found a go-ahead goal which proved to be the winner as Luke Bodtker slipped a puck through the legs of Ekblad to give Medicine Hat a 4-3 advantage. Lethbridge pulled the goaltender late in regulation, but Liam Ruck completed his hat-trick into an empty-net rounding out a 5-3 victory for the Tigers.<\/p>\n

Following the conclusion of the game, as per WHL guidelines, the two games competed in a sudden-death overtime period to pilot a ‘no-return’ overtime where players are not allowed to exit or play the puck out of the offensive zone once gaining the attacking blue line. Though, the trial overtime period didn’t last long as Markus Ruck was sprung on a breakaway and he shelved home a goal just 39-seconds into the period as Markus and Liam Ruck combined for seven points in the contest, including the overtime goal.\u00a0Medicine Hat outshot the Lethbridge 12-8 in the third period.<\/p>\n

The Hurricanes and Tigers both directed 29 shots on goal in the contest. Lethbridge went 0\/1 on the power play while Medicine Hat was 2\/4 with the extra man.<\/p>\n

\n1) ‘Canes – #26 Oliver Sichtar (1 goal, 1 assist)
\n2) Tigers – #26 Markus Ruck (1 goal, 2 assists)
\n3) ‘Canes – #18 Cohen Pentney (1 goal)<\/p>\n

The Hurricanes open the exhibition schedule with the defeat which drops their record to 0-1-0-0 in the 2026 Pre-Season. Lethbridge will visit Medicine Hat on Saturday night at 7:00pm at Co-op Place in the pre-season rematch between the two Highway-3 rivals.<\/p>\n

The ‘Canes will return to the VisitLethbridge.com Arena on Thursday, September 10th when they welcome the Red Deer Rebels at 7:00pm in their final home pre-season game. Lethbridge, AB –\u00a0<\/strong>The Lethbridge Hurricanes open the 2026 Pre-Season schedule tonight at 7:00pm as they welcome the Medicine Hat Tigers to the VisitLethbridge.com Arena.<\/p>\n

The Hurricanes will play a total of four exhibition games, including two at home and two on the road. Lethbridge will face Medicine Hat twice in the pre-season while also facing the Red Deer Rebels and Calgary Hitmen each once. The ‘Canes ended their 2026 Training Camp on Sunday morning with Team Black defeating Team Red 4-3 in an intra-squad game at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena. Last year, the Hurricanes posted a 1-4-0-0 record in the pre-season while posting a record of 17-47-3-1 during the regular season.<\/p>\n

The Tigers will also play for pre-season games. Medicine hat will play a home-and-home set with the Hurricanes while also doing the same with the Swift Current Broncos next weekend. Last year, the Tigers posted a record of 4-0-0-0 in the pre-season, which included a pair of games in the Yukon. Medicine Hat finished the 2025-2026 regular season with a record of 50-10-5-3 before falling in the Eastern Conference Championship Series to the Prince Albert Raiders.<\/p>\n

Tonight will be the first of two exhibition meetings between the Hurricanes and Tigers while the first of ten contests head-to-head, pre-season and regular season combined, between the two Highway-3 rivals. Tickets for the Hurricanes home pre-season games can be purchased for $10.00, plus fees. Proceeds from the ticket sales will benefit the Lethbridge Minor Hockey Association. Last year, Lethbridge posted an 0-6-2-0 record against Medicine Hat marking the first time in Hurricanes history they were held winless in a season series against the Tigers. The \u2018Canes have lost 18-straight games (pre-season, regular season and playoffs combined) to their Highway-3 rivals dating back to the 2024-2025 season. 41-Man: <\/strong>Lethbridge unveiled their 2026 Pre-Season Roster on Monday ahead of their exhibition debut. The roster includes 41-players, including 24 forwards, 12 defencemen and five goaltenders. On the roster, the Hurricanes have a total of 24 players selected in the WHL Prospects Draft.<\/p>\n

Returners: <\/strong>Of the Hurricanes 41-man roster, a total of 16 players are returning from last season, including two goaltenders, six defencemen and eight forwards. Of the 16 players, five of the top-six scorers from last year return for another season including Easton Daneault, Owen Berge, Kade Duell and Kyle Heger.<\/p>\n

Top-3: <\/strong>The \u2018Canes enter the 2026 Pre-Season schedule with just three overage players on their roster. Owen Berge, Kade Duell and Nathan Maloney return as the three 2006-born players the Hurricanes will carry to begin the season. Of the three, only Maloney sat outside the top-5 in team scoring last year.<\/p>\n

Something to Prove: <\/strong>A pair of Hurricanes\u2019 returners had their 2025-2026 season come to an end due to injury: Enzo DiDomenicatonio and Nathan Maloney. DiDomenicantonio enters his second season with the \u2018Canes after recording just six assists in the 22 games he played before suffering a season-ending injury in December of last year. While Maloney skated in 46 contests finishing second among defencemen scoring on the Hurricanes with 28 points (4g-24a).<\/p>\n

The 40th<\/sup>: <\/strong>The \u2018Canes are celebrating their 40th<\/sup> anniversary in Lethbridge during the 2026-2027 season. The Hurricanes began play in the windy city in the 1987-1988 season after the Calgary Wranglers were relocated to Lethbridge. The franchise spans back to the originally Western Canadian Hockey League dating back to 1967 beginning as the originally Winnipeg Jets before changing names to the Winnipeg Club and Winnipeg Monarchs before the franchise moved to Calgary in 1977.<\/p>\n

New GM: <\/strong>On July 23, the Hurricanes officially announced Barclay Parneta as the club\u2019s new General Manager. Parneta had held the Interim General Manager title since January 2026. Thursday, August 27th<\/sup> \u2013 PROSPECT CAMP SCRIMMAGE \u2013 Team Red (3) vs. Team Grey (0): <\/strong>The Hurricanes opened their 2026 Training Camp on Thursday at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena with a Prospects Camp scrimmage which saw Team Red defeat Team Grey 3-0. Team Grey outshot Team Red 34-33 in the game, but Cohen Kuntz and Liam Bergen combined for the shutout victory. Artello Forestal scored twice while Cash Whitmore added the other goal in the victory.<\/p>\n

Friday, August 28th<\/sup> \u2013 PROSPECT CAMP SCRIMMAGE \u2013 Team Red (4) vs. Team Grey (0): <\/strong>Team Red improved to 2-0 during Prospects Camp on Friday with a 4-0 shutout victory over Team Grey at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena. Hayden Carpenter, Luka Samu, Nixxon Arcand-Vandale and Cash Whitmore scored in the win while Liam Bergen, Cohen Kuntz and Cole Anderson combined for a 30-save shutout.<\/p>\n

Saturday, August 29th<\/sup> \u2013 PROSPECT CAMP SCRIMMAGE \u2013 Team Red (5) vs. Team Grey (2): <\/strong>Team Red completed the Prospects Camp sweep with a 5-2 victory over Team Grey. Knox Kehler scored twice while Artello Forestal, Luka Samu and Wyatt Olson scored in the win for Team Red while Kendon Peacock and Brett Stuparyk notched for Team Grey. Team Red finished Prospects Camp with a perfect 3-0 record.<\/p>\n

Sunday, August 30th <\/sup>\u2013 INTERSQUAD GAME \u2013 Team Black (4) vs. Team Red (3): <\/strong>The \u2018Canes held their Intersquad game on Sunday morning at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena. Jake Evans scored three times while Brett Stuparyk scored in the win for Team Black while Dayne Beuker, Luka Samu and Tyden Lafournaise potted the goals for Team Red. The Hurricanes once again held Skills Sessions for the two Prospects Camp rosters while holding a Main Camp Practice. Lethbridge continued their camp with their second of three Prospects Camp Scrimmages which saw Team Red improve to 2-0 during camp with a 4-0 victory over Team Grey.<\/p>\n
