Canes lose tough one in Lethbridge
Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes fell 4-3 to the Swift Current Broncos in a back and forth affair on Saturday night in Lethbridge. The loss is the Canes second in as many nights as they continue this bizarre three game series with the Broncs; a series that will conclude on Wednesday in Swift Current. The Canes came flying out of the gates in the first registering the first 11 shots of the game before Swift answered back with a goal on their first shot of the game. The Canes battled back right away though as Russ Maxwell drove the puck hard to the outside before picking the far top corner with a pin point wrister to tie things up 1-1 with his third of the season. But the Broncos would manage to regain the lead prior to the end of the first with another shot that looked to take an odd bounce to give the visitors a 2-1 lead entering the second despite the canes outchancing the Broncos and out shooting them 14-5 in the first.
Lethbridge then bounced back in the second is Neil Tarnasky buried his first WHL goal to tie things 2-2 just minutes into the period. The 3027 strong at the ENMAX knew they were in for a wild finish as the Broncos once again took the lead, this time on the power play three minutes into the third. Lethbridge would once again answer back with a goal from another second year player Mark Reners. Reners took a beauty feed from Russ Maxwell from behind the net and roofed the shot to notch his sixth of the year. But the Canes penalty kill was tested once again as Swift Current tallied the game winner with the man advantage with just six minutes to play. The Hurricanes were unable to convert on their three power play opportunities, while the Broncos were 2 for 5 on the night including both big third period goals. Maxwell and Reners both finished the night with a goal and an assist while Brandon Anderson posted a 27 save performance between the pipes.
Next up the Canes will be wrapping up this three game stint on Wednesday as they travel to Swift Current once again to take on the Broncos.
