Hurricanes Drop 3-2 Decision to End Trip in Moose Jaw
Moose Jaw, SK – The Lethbridge Hurricanes ended a five-game road trip on Sunday with a 3-2 loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors at Mosaic Place.
The Hurricanes, who ended a six-game losing streak on Saturday, had an early power play opportunity but it was Moose Jaw that struck while down a man as Thomas Tien scored his first WHL goal just 2:01 into the game on a puck that deflected off a ‘Canes defenseman and in to make it 1-0. The Warriors added to their lead when Daemon Hunt buried his fourth of the season just 3:52 later to make it 2-0. Before the period was out, Eric Alarie scored his fourth to make it 3-0 Moose Jaw after twenty minutes of play. Lethbridge was outshot 13-8 in the first period.
In the second period, the Hurricanes came out flying as they kept the Warriors pinned in their zone for extended shifts a pair of times but couldn’t solve Carl Tetachuk. The ‘Canes eventually did get on the board on a breakaway goal for Ty Nash as he deked to the backhand and lifted one by the former Hurricane goaltender to make it 3-1 at the 16:18 mark. Less than a minute later, the ‘Canes pulled to within a goal as Jett Jones extended his career-high point-scoring streak to five games with his fifth of the year at the 17:17 mark; Trevor Thurston and Logan McCutcheon earned the assists on the goal. The Hurricanes reversed the script in shots as they outshot Moose Jaw 13-8 in the middle frame.
The ‘Canes continued to press early in the third period with a pair of power plays, but couldn’t solve Tetachuk. Lethbridge had a glorious opportunity as Logan Barlage ripped one off the underside of the crossbar but it stayed out keeping the score 3-2. The ‘Canes pulled the netminder Thomson at the end of the game in hopes of a game-tying goal; on a goal-mouth scramble Barlage had a gaping net but had his stick tied up by a Warrior defender before the Warriors cleared the puck and the game to a close as Moose Jaw hung on to a 3-2 victory.
The Hurricanes outshot the Warriors 16-7 in the third period and 37-28 in the game. Lethbridge was 0/4 with the power play and 1/1 with the penalty kill.
Three stars of the game were:
1) Warriors – #35 Carl Tetachuk (35-saves)
2) Warriors – #20 Thomas Tien (1 goal)
3) ‘Canes – #21 Ty Nash (1 goal)
The loss for the Hurricanes drops their overall record to 6-10-0-0 on the season as they dropped their seventh game in their last eight outings. The ‘Canes finish their five-game trip with a 1-4-0-0 record as they are now 2-7-0-0 away from home this year.
