Hurricanes Acquire Langkow, Prospects and Picks from Giants for Zimmer; Release Renas
Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes Hockey Club announced Monday they have acquired 2004-born forward Colton Langkow, 2008-born unsigned prospect Kai Anderson, a second-round draft pick in 2024 and a third-round draft pick in the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft from the Vancouver Giants in exchange for 2004-born forward Tyson Zimmer.
Langkow, 19, was originally drafted by the Giants in the fifth-round (99th overall) in the 2019 WHL Draft. The Scottsdale, AZ, product has appeared in 128 regular season games with Vancouver over parts of four seasons collecting 21 points (8g-13a) along with 215 penalty minutes. He has also appeared in 11 post-season games with the Giants collecting two goals. Langkow has posted six points (4g-2a) along with 54 penalty minutes in 25 games this season. The 5’11, 176-pound forward is the son of former NHL forward Daymond Langkow.
“Colton will add a dimension I felt we needed for our forward group as he brings grit and the ability to be physical,” said Hurricanes General Manager Peter Anholt. “We think he will be a good addition to our forward group.”
Anderson, 15, was drafted by the Giants in sixth-round (117th overall) in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft. The North Vancouver, BC, product has totaled 15 points (9g-6a) along with two penalty minutes in 14 games with the Burnaby Winter Club U17 Prep team. He has also added one goal in five games at the U18 level. Anderson collected 26 points (13g-13a) in 27 games with the BWC U15 Prep team during the 2022-2023 season.
“We are really excited to add Anderson in this deal. He’s having a really good season at the Burnaby Winter Club, and we really like his potential and upside,” Anholt said.
Zimmer, 19, who was originally drafted by the Brandon Wheat Kings in the first-round (6th overall) in the 2019 WHL Draft was acquired by the Hurricanes prior to the 2022-2023 season. The Russell, MB, product appeared in 101 regular season games with Lethbridge over two seasons totaling 71 points (31g-40a) along with 62 penalty minutes. He added two points (1g-1a) in four post-season games with the ‘Canes in 2023. The 6’1, 191-pound forward has collected 23 points (12g-11a) along with 30 penalty minutes in 37 games this season with the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes have also released 2005-born forward Dustin Renas. The Saskatoon, SK, product was originally drafted by the Hurricanes in the fifth-round (104th overall) in the 2020 WHL Draft. He appeared in 85 career regular season games with Lethbridge collecting 15 points (5g-10a) along with 57 penalty minutes. Renas also skated in two post-season games in 2023. The 6’1, 168-pound forward recorded seven points (3g-4a) along with 12 penalty minutes in 30 games this season with the Hurricanes.
