GAME DAY: Hurricanes Welcome Rebels at 6:00pm
Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes open a three-game homestand tonight at 6:00pm as they welcome the Red Deer Rebels to the VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
The Hurricanes (6-3-1-0) enter on a two-game losing streak after falling 4-1 in Swift Current to the Broncos on Friday night. Brayden Edwards scored the lone goals while Brady Smith made 26-saves in the defeat. The ‘Canes were outshot 30-20 in the game while going 0/2 on the power play and 3/4 on the penalty kill. Lethbridge enters 5-0-1-0 at home this season.
The Rebels (7-4-1-0) enter after earning a 4-2 win on Friday at home against the Medicine Hat Tigers. Jhett Larson, Jaxon Fuder, Carson Birne and Ollie Josephson scored in the win while Chase Wutzke made 40-saves in the victory. Red Deer was outshot 42-33 in the game. The Rebels enter play tonight with a 2-2-0-0 record on the road this season while having posted a 3-1-0-0 record in their last four games.
Tonight will be the second of eight meetings on the season between the Hurricanes and Rebels; Lethbridge has posted a 1-0-0-0 record so far this season against Red Deer. The ‘Canes have won three-straight and are 5-1-0-0 in their last six games against the Rebels dating back to last season.
The Hurricanes will be celebrating 50 Years of WHL hockey in Lethbridge and 50 Years of the Sportsplex during the night. The ‘Canes will honour and celebrate the original 1974-75 Lethbridge Broncos and the 1987-88 Lethbridge Hurricanes prior to the game while throwback pricing, including $1.00 hotdogs and $0.50 pop and popcorn during the game, while supplies last. VS. REBELS: Tonight will be the second of eight meetings during the regular season between the Hurricanes and the Rebels. The Hurricanes are 1-0-0-0 against the Rebels this season after going 4-2-0-0 against Red Deer in 2023-2024. Do The Worm: Hurricanes 19-year-old forward Logan Wormald has been on a tear to start the new season. The Langley, BC, product enters tonight with points in eight of his last nine games having collected 12 points (6g-6a) in that span. Wormald had a career-long eight-game point streak end on Friday in Swift Current. He leads the ‘Canes in goals, points and plus-minus.
Eddy’s Ready: Brayden Edwards has been dominant since returning to the Hurricanes line up. In seven games since returning from Detroit Red Wings Main Camp, he has racked up 10 points (4g-6a) along with 12 penalty minutes. Edwards has also gone 52.3% in the faceoff circle. The Abbotsford, BC, product set a career-high with 31 goals and 70 points in 2023-2024.
No Jynx: Will Sharpe has had a great start to his sophomore season in the WHL. The 17-year-old draft eligible defenceman as collected 11 points (2g-9a) in 10 games while going plus-4 with eight penalty minutes. Sharpe enters tonight having collected 10 points (2g-8a) in his last six games. He is one of 17 defencemen in the WHL to be at-or-above a point-per-game pace this season.
Strong PK: Lethbridge’s penalty kill has been strong to start the season. The ‘Canes PK opened the season with 11-consecutive kills before allowing a goal. The Hurricanes have gone 38-for-46 on the penalty kill for a kill rate of 82.6%, ranking fifth in the WHL. Lethbridge finished third on the kill during the 2023-2024 regular season with a PK% of 81.1%.
Super Six: The Hurricanes announced that six prospects including Tyden Lafournaise (MB), Reid Soper (AB), Leif Oaten (AB), Colt Carter (AB), Jake Evans (SK) and Matteo Di Stefano (BC) will all represent their Province’s at the 2024 WHL Cup. The tournament will take place in Red Deer from October 23rd until 27th.
Sweet-16: The Hurricanes currently have two 16-year-old players on their roster: Chase Petersen and Gavin Lesiuk. The pair were both second round selections by the ‘Canes in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft. The duo combined for four points (3g-1a) in the pre-season for the Hurricanes.
