GAME DAY: Hurricanes Welcome Giants in First of Back-to-Back at Home
Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes continue a four-game homestand tonight at 7:00pm as they welcome the Vancouver Giants to the VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
The Hurricanes (4-1-0-0) enter after earning a 4-3 victory over the Moose Jaw Warriors last Friday at home. Brayden Edwards scored twice while Logan Wormald and Leo Braillard added the others; Brady Smith made 19-saves in the win. Lethbridge enters tonight with a 3-0-0-0 record at home this season and are an impressive 13-4-4-0 in their last 21 regular season games at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena dating back to last year.
The Giants (4-2-0-0) are coming off a 5-2 victory in Red Deer against the Rebels on Tuesday. Mazden Leslie led all scorers with four-points (1g-3a) in the win while Ty Halaburda, Cameron Schmidt, Aaron Obobaifo and Jacob Oreskoic also potted goals; Matthew Hutchison made 32-saves in the victory. Vancouver has posted a 1-1-0-0 record in the first two games of their five-game Central Division road trip. The G-men are 2-1-0-0 on the road this season.
Tonight will be the lone meeting on the season between the Hurricanes and Giants; Lethbridge earned a 4-3 overtime victory in Vancouver in the lone matchup last year. It will be the first visit the Giants have made to the VisitLethbridge.com Arena since November 4, 2022 – a span of 707 days. VS. GIANTS: Tonight will be the only meeting on the season between the Hurricanes and Giants. Lethbridge earned a 4-3 overtime win in Vancouver last season in the lone meeting. Thru 5: The Hurricanes enter tonight with a 4-1-0-0 record (8 points) on the season after five games. The ‘Canes are 3-0-0-0 at home and 1-1-0-0 on the road so far this season. In 2023-2024, Lethbridge had posted a 4-1-0-0 record after five games.
Strong Start: The 2024-2025 season marks the second straight season the ‘Canes have started the year with a 4-1-0-0 record through their first five games. This year is just the third time the Hurricanes have won four of their first five games. Lethbridge’s best starts through six games were in 1996-1997 when they started 5-1-0-0 and 1993-1994 when they opened the year with six-straight victories.
Highway 3 Trade: The Hurricanes announced on Saturday, October 5th they acquired 19-year-old forward Shane Smith from the Medicine Hat Tigers in exchange for 20-year-old goaltender Harrison Meneghin. Smith appeared in 143 career WHL games with the Tigers totaling 85 points (48g-37a) along with 130 penalty minutes. He attended Vegas Golden Knights training camp in September.
Eddy’s Ready: Brayden Edwards has been dominant since returning to the Hurricanes line up. In three games since returning from Detroit Red Wings Main Camp, he has racked up seven points (3g-4a) along with six penalty minutes. Edwards has also gone 59% in the faceoff circle. The Abbotsford, BC, product set a career-high with 31 goals and 70 points in 2023-2024.
Strong PK: Lethbridge’s penalty kill has been strong to start the season. The ‘Canes PK opened the season with 11-consecutive kills before allowing a goal. The Hurricanes have gone 19-for-20 on the penalty kill for a kill rate of 86.4%, ranking third in the WHL. Lethbridge finished third on the kill during the 2023-2024 regular season with a PK% of 81.1%.
Super Six: The Hurricanes announced that six prospects including Tyden Lafournaise (MB), Reid Soper (AB), Leif Oaten (AB), Colt Carter (AB), Jake Evans (SK) and Matteo Di Stefano (BC) will all represent their Province’s at the 2024 WHL Cup. The tournament will take place in Red Deer from October 23rd until 27th.
WHL Award: Rookie goaltender Koen Cleaver was named the WHL’s Goaltender of the Week for opening weekend. The Port Alberni, BC, product was terrific making 30-saves for his first WHL victory on Saturday in Red Deer against the Rebels. Cleaver posted a 0.95 goals against average and a sparkling .968 save percentage in his lone start.
Sweet-16: The Hurricanes currently have two 16-year-old players on their roster: Chase Petersen and Gavin Lesiuk. The pair were both second round selections by the ‘Canes in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft. The duo combined for four points (3g-1a) in the pre-season for the Hurricanes.
New Captain: On August 30th, the Hurricanes announced Noah Chadwick as the 32nd Captain in team history. The Toronto Maple Leaf prospect succeeds outgoing captain Joe Arntsen who served for three seasons. Chadwick served as an Alternate Captain in 2023-2024. The Saskatoon, SK, product recorded a career-high 56 points (12g-44a) in 66 games last season.
