GAME DAY: Hurricanes Visit Tigers in Second of Home-and-Home
Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes will open a four-game road trip tonight as they visit the Medicine Hat Tigers at 7:00pm at Co-op Place in the second of a home-and-home set.
The Hurricanes (20-16-3-0) enter on a two-game winning streak after earning a 5-2 victory on Friday over the Tigers at the ENMAX Centre. Trae Wilke, Logan Wormald, Logan McCutcheon, Dylan Sydor and Leo Braillard scored in the win while Harrison Meneghin made 33-saves in the victory. Lethbridge ended a season-long homestand with a 3-1-0-0 record while improving to 5-1-1-0 since the Christmas break. The Hurricanes enter with an 8-9-0-0 road record this season.
The Tigers (25-13-2-0) enter having had their two-game winning streak end with the loss to the Hurricanes on Friday night. Vasyl Spilka and Shane Smith scored in the losing cause for the Tigers while Ethan McCallum made seven saves in relief after Zach Zahara allowed five goals on 24 shots in the game. Medicine Hat enters with a 13-5-2-0 record at home this season.
Tonight will be the sixth meeting on the season between the Hurricanes and Tigers; Lethbridge has posted a 3-2-0-0 record in the previous five meetings against Medicine Hat while winning two of their three trips to Co-op Place. Five Alive: NHL Central Scouting announced their Midterm Rankings for the 2024 NHL Draft on January 12th and five Hurricanes were listed. Miguel Marques (33rd), Brayden Edwards (187th), Trae Wilke (190th) and Landen Ward (192nd) were ranked among North American skaters while Harrison Meneghin (26th) was ranked among North American goaltenders. A total of 60 WHL players were ranked by Central Scouting.
Deadline Day: The Hurricanes announced a pair of trades on January 10th as they acquired 2004-born forward Hayden Pakkala from the Prince Albert Raiders while adding 2004-born defenceman Braeden Wynne from the Seattle Thunderbirds – both acquired for draft picks.
Big Day: The Hurricanes announced on January 8th a trio of trades as they added overage forwards Sean Tschigerl and Dylan Sydor while acquiring 19-year-old forward Colton Langkow along with prospect Kai Anderson. The Hurricanes dealt away Blake Swetlikoff and Tyson Zimmer in the trades while announcing the release of Dustin Renas.
NHL Ink: Hurricanes defenceman Noah Chadwick signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on December 22nd. The Saskatoon, SK, product was a sixth-round (185th overall) selection by the Leafs in the 2023 NHL Draft. He became the first ‘Cane since Dylan Cozens (BUF) to sign an ELC deal. Chadwick has recorded 32 points (8g-24a) in 37 games with the Hurricanes this season. He leads the ‘Canes in defenceman scoring while sitting tied for eighth among all WHL blueliners in points.
Swiss Pick: Leo Braillard represented Switzerland at the 2024 World Junior Championship becoming the first ‘Cane to represent the Swiss at the World Juniors since Luca Sbisa attended three-straight tournaments (2008, 2009, 2010). Braillard collected one goal in five games with Switzerland. The 2005-born forward, who was acquired by the ‘Canes on CHL waivers from the Shawinigan Cataractes, has recorded 21 points (8g-13a) in 19 games with the Hurricanes. He has collected 25 points (10g-15a) in 26 CHL games this year.
Three Amigos: The trio of Miguel Marques, Brayden Edwards and Logan Wormald have been red-hot for the Hurricanes of late. The ‘Canes trio have combined for a whopping 81-points, including 28 goals, over the last 19 games – an average of 4.26 points per game. The three have combined to score 28 of the ‘Canes last 66 goals in 19 games, totaling 42.4% of the team’s goals in that span. Marques leads the team with 47 points on the season while Edwards (43) and Wormald (35) are second and fourth in team scoring.
