GAME DAY: Hurricanes Take On Oil Kings in Afternoon Tilt
Edmonton, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes will play the second of a two-game set in Edmonton this afternoon against the Oil Kings at Rogers Place at 4:00pm.
The Hurricanes (3-0-0-0) won their third straight game to start the season on Friday with a 4-3 shootout victory over the Oil Kings. Landen Ward, Tyson Zimmer and Carter Dereniwsky scored in regulation while Zimmer and Logan Wormald potted shootout goals in the victory; Harrison Meneghin made 32-saves while turning aside two of three Edmonton shooters in the shootout. Lethbridge enters today with a 2-0-0-0 road record on the season and have won five-straight games in Edmonton dating back to January of 2022.
The Oil Kings (1-1-0-1) have earned points in two of their first three games after collecting a single point in the shootout loss on Friday to the Hurricanes. Nathan Pilling made his season debut scoring twice while John Szabo scored the other in the defeat; Kolby Hay made 31-saves in the contest. Edmonton is winless in their first two home games this season after winning just four games at Rogers Place last year.
Today will be the second of six meetings on the season between the Hurricanes and Oil Kings. It will also be the second of three visits the ‘Canes will make to Rogers Place in a span of 11 days. Thru 3: The Hurricanes enter tonight with a 3-0-0-0 record (6 points) on the season after three games. The ‘Canes are 1-0-0-0 at home and 2-0-0-0 on the road so far this season. In 2022-2023, the Hurricanes had posted a 2-1-0-0 record after three games.
Perfect Start: After earning a pair of victories against the Swift Current Broncos on opening weekend and a Friday win over the Edmonton Oil Kings, the Hurricanes have started the season with a perfect 3-0-0-0 record. It is the first time the ‘Canes have started the year with three straight wins since 2008-2009. The last time Lethbridge started 4-0-0-0 was the 1996-1997 season when they opened the season 5-0-0-0.
Big 3 Return: The Hurricanes received their big-3 defencemen back as Joe Arntsen, Chase Pauls and Noah Chadwick all returned from NHL Training Camps. Arntsen attended New York Rangers camp, Pauls attended Los Angeles Kings camp while Chadwick was at the Toronto Maple Leafs camp.
Triumphant Return: After returning from the Minnesota Wild’s Training Camp, goaltender Harrison Meneghin was superb on opening weekend. The South Surrey, BC, product made 40-saves on opening night before making 24-saves on Saturday helping the ‘Canes to a 2-0-0-0 start. Meneghin enters tonight with a 1.95 goals against average and a sparkling .941 save percentage.
Sweet-16: After re-assigning defenceman Carsen Adair on Monday, rearguard Will Sharpe remains the only 16-year-old player on the Hurricanes 2023-2024 roster. Sharpe – who was selected 11th overall in the 2022 WHL Draft – earned his first WHL point on Saturday in Swift Current with an assist.
Pre-Season Leader: Draft eligible forward Miguel Marques had a great pre-season collecting nine points, including four goals and five assists, in four games. Marques finished tied for second in WHL pre-season points while finishing tied for first in the Eastern Conference. He had 20 points (8g-12a) last season.
Double Dare: Lethbridge acquired 2004-born forward Carter Dereniwsky on Tuesday from the Victoria Royals in exchange for an eighth-round draft pick. Dereniwsky has appeared in 76 career regular season games totaling 23 career points (10g-13a) along with 36 penalty minutes with the Royals. He recorded 18 points (8g-10a) and 22 penalty minutes in 51 games in 2022-2023 with Victoria.
Gone Pro: On August 10th, the Hurricanes announced that Brent Kisio resigned as head coach after eight years at the helm to accept an assistant coaching job with the Henderson Silver Knights of the American Hockey League. Kisio left the ‘Canes as the winningest coach in team history posting a 267-176-44 regular season record while qualifying for the playoffs each season.
New Bench Boss: The Hurricanes announced Bill Peters the 15th head coach in team history on August 30th. Peters, who has served as head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes and Calgary Flames, returns to the WHL for the first time since 2008. He helped guide the Spokane Chiefs to a WHL and Memorial Cup Championship in 2008 before going to professional hockey. He has posted a 114-92-13 record in the WHL.
