GAME DAY: Hurricanes Return Home to Face Rebels
Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes open a two-game homestand tonight as they welcome the Red Deer Rebels at 7:00pm at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
The Hurricanes (12-29-0-1) enter on a four-game losing streak after suffering a 5-1 loss on Sunday afternoon in Calgary against the Hitmen at Scotiabank Saddledome. Owen Berge scored the lone goal while Leif Oaten made 22-saves. It marked just the fourth time this season Lethbridge outshot an opponent as the ‘Canes held the edge 33-27 in shots. The Hurricanes enter tonight with a 7-12-0-1 record at home on the season, but are 7-7-0-1 in their last 15 at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
The Rebels (13-21-2-2) enter after earning a 3-2 overtime victory over the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday. Noah Chadi and Nate Yellowaga scored in regulation before Beckett Hamilton potted the overtime winner for his team-leading 13th goal of the season. Red Deer outshot Swift Current 40-24 in the game. The Rebels enter tonight with a 3-6-1-0 record in their last ten games while having posted an 8-9-1-2 record on the road this year.
Tonight will be the fifth meeting on the season between the Hurricanes and Rebels; Lethbridge has posted a 1-3-0-0 record so far this season having gone 0-2-0-0 at home against Red Deer. Lethbridge has posted a 1-3-0-0 record against Red Deer this season after posting a record of 7-1-0-0 against the Rebels last year. Midterm Ranked: Three Hurricanes players were ranked by NHL Central Scouting on the Midterm Rankings on January 12th. Kyle Heger (67th), Gavin Lesiuk (117th) and Nathan Maloney (220th) were all ranked among North American skaters. Of the three, Maloney was the lone player not ranked by Central Scouting on the Preliminary Players to Watch List in October.
Hey, Hegs: The ‘Canes announced on January 7th the acquisition of draft eligible defenceman Kyle Heger along with a conditional fourth-round draft pick in 2028 from the Medicine Hat Tigers in exchange for 19-year-old forward Luke Cozens and a conditional fourth-round draft pick in 2028. Heger, who is ranked as a ‘B’ prospect by NHL Central Scouting has collected 15 points (5g-10a) in 35 games this season while Cozens had led the Hurricanes in scoring with 44 points (17g-27a) leading the team in goals and points.
All Hail Oli: Lethbridge announced the acquisition of 2007-born forward Oli Chenier from the Prince Albert Raiders in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick in 2026 on January 5th. Chenier appeared in 148 regular season games with the Raiders amassing 48 points (17g-31a) over three seasons. The Winnipeg, MB product was originally a third-round draft pick by Prince Albert in 2022.
OT Kings: The ‘Canes enter tonight having posted a perfect 5-0 record this season in games decided in overtime after a 4-3 win over the Swift Current Broncos on Friday. Lethbridge has posted a 99-88 record with 96 ties all-time in overtime in their history. The five OT victories this season is tied for the WHL lead with the Medicine Hat Tigers.
2025 Year in Review: Lethbridge concluded their 2025 portion of their 2025-2026 season on Tuesday against Edmonton. In the calendar year of 2025, the Hurricanes have posted a record of 35-33-2-1 in 71 regular season games. The ‘Canes went 17-16-1-1 at home while going 18-17-1-1 on the road this year.
Bronze Medalist: Hurricanes forward Mykolas Skadauskas earned a Bronze medal at the World Junior Championship Division II tournament with Lithuania. The 18-year-old appeared in five games collecting three points (1g-2a) along with a plus-1 rating and two penalty minutes. Skadauskas has three assists in 17 games this year with the ‘Canes.
Veteran Adds: On Friday, December 12th, the Hurricanes signed veterans WHLers Andrew Petruk and Fraser Leonard from the British Columbia Hockey League. The overage forward Petruk had appeared in 19 games split between the Langley Rivermen and Vernon Vipers while the 19-year-old Leonard had skated in 24 games with the Prince George Spruce Kings this season. The duo both made their ‘Cane debuts on December 12th against the Saskatoon Blades at SaskTel Centre.
