GAME DAY: Hurricanes Open Two-Game Set in Edmonton
Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes continue a three-game road trip as they open a two-game set in Edmonton against the Oil Kings tonight at 7:00pm at Rogers Place.
The Hurricanes (2-0-0-0) enter after opening the season with a pair of victories over the Swift Current Broncos last weekend. The ‘Canes earned a 5-2 victory on Saturday in Swift Current. Brayden Edwards scored twice while Logan Wormald, Tyson Zimmer and Trae Wilke added the others; Harrison Meneghin made 24-saves in the win. Lethbridge enters with a 1-0-0-0 record on the road so far this season.
The Oil Kings (1-1-0-0) earned an opening weekend split with the Red Deer Rebels last weekend. Edmonton earned a 4-2 victory in Red Deer on Friday before suffering a 4-3 loss on Saturday at Rogers Place. Lethbridge product Marshall Finnie scored twice while overage defenceman Marc Lajoie add the other in the losing cause on Saturday. Edmonton is 0-1-0-0 at home so far this season.
Tonight will be the first of a two-game set between the Hurricanes and Oil Kings this weekend, with the second match-up scheduled for Sunday afternoon. The game can be streamed on WHL Live, watched at Browns Socialhouse in Lethbridge or heard on 106.7 ROCK.

VS. OIL KINGS: Tonight will be the first of six meetings on the season between the Hurricanes and Oil Kings. Lethbridge posted a 4-1-0-1 record in 2022-2023 against their Central Division rivals, including posting a 3-0-0-0 record at Rogers Place. It was the first time in in team history that the Hurricanes swept all road games in Edmonton. Tonight will be the first of a two-game set this weekend between the two foes.

Perfect Start: After a pair of victories over the Swift Current Broncos on opening weekend, the Hurricanes sit with a perfect 2-0-0-0 record on the season. It marks the first time since the 2021-2022 season that the ‘Canes won the first two games of the season. The last time Lethbridge started with a 3-0-0-0 record was in the 2008-2009 season when the ‘Canes beat Kootenay twice and Medicine Hat to start the campaign.
Big 3 Return: The Hurricanes received their big-3 defencemen back as Joe Arntsen, Chase Pauls and Noah Chadwick all returned from NHL Training Camps. Arntsen attended New York Rangers camp, Pauls attended Los Angeles Kings camp while Chadwick was at the Toronto Maple Leafs camp.
Triumphant Return: After returning from the Minnesota Wild’s Training Camp, goaltender Harrison Meneghin was superb on opening weekend. The South Surrey, BC, product made 40-saves on opening night before making 24-saves on Saturday helping the ‘Canes to a 2-0-0-0 start. Meneghin enters tonight with a 1.50 goals against average and a sparkling .955 save percentage.
Sweet-16: After re-assigning defenceman Carsen Adair on Monday, rearguard Will Sharpe remains the only 16-year-old player on the Hurricanes 2023-2024 roster. Sharpe – who was selected 11th overall in the 2022 WHL Draft – earned his first WHL point on Saturday in Swift Current with an assist.
Pre-Season Leader: Draft eligible forward Miguel Marques had a great pre-season collecting nine points, including four goals and five assists, in four games. Marques finished tied for second in WHL pre-season points while finishing tied for first in the Eastern Conference. He had 20 points (8g-12a) last season.
Double Dare: Lethbridge acquired 2004-born forward Carter Dereniwsky on Tuesday from the Victoria Royals in exchange for an eighth-round draft pick. Dereniwsky has appeared in 76 career regular season games totaling 23 career points (10g-13a) along with 36 penalty minutes with the Royals. He recorded 18 points (8g-10a) and 22 penalty minutes in 51 games in 2022-2023 with Victoria.
Gone Pro: On August 10th, the Hurricanes announced that Brent Kisio resigned as head coach after eight years at the helm to accept an assistant coaching job with the Henderson Silver Knights of the American Hockey League. Kisio left the ‘Canes as the winningest coach in team history posting a 267-176-44 regular season record while qualifying for the playoffs each season.
New Bench Boss: The Hurricanes announced Bill Peters the 15th head coach in team history on August 30th. Peters, who has served as head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes and Calgary Flames, returns to the WHL for the first time since 2008. He helped guide the Spokane Chiefs to a WHL and Memorial Cup Championship in 2008 before going to professional hockey. He has posted a 111-92-13 record in the WHL.
