GAME DAY: Hurricanes Open Homestand Against Wheat Kings
Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes open a four-game homestand tonight at 7:00pm as they welcome the Brandon Wheat Kings at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
The Hurricanes (12-32-0-1) enter on a seven-game losing streak after suffering a 5-0 loss on Saturday in Red Deer against the Rebels at Marchant Crane Centrium. It marked the third time this year that the ‘Canes were shutout in a game while Leif Oaten made 39-saves in the contest. Lethbridge enters tonight with a 2-14-0-0 in their last 16 games while having posted a 7-14-0-1 at home this year.
The Wheat Kings (24-17-1-0) enter on a two-game winning streak after earning a 6-1 victory over the Victoria Royals on Friday at Assiniboine Credit Union Place. Jaxon Jacobson scored twice while Gunnar Gleasman, Joby Baumuller, Caleb Hadland and Luke Mistelbacher scored the other goals in the win; Jayden Kraus made 28-saves against his former team. Brandon enters tonight with a record of 11-7-0-0 on the road this year.
Tonight will be the final of four meetings on the season between the Hurricanes and Wheat Kings; Lethbridge has posted a 1-2-0-0 record this year against Brandon with the home team having been victorious in all three previous games. 28-15-1-1 record after 45 games. The ‘Canes have posted a 1-7-0-0 record in the month of January. Lethbridge is on pace to record 18 victories this year.
Surging Special Teams: Lethbridge’s special teams have been strong of late. The ‘Canes power play has gone 5-for-14 (35.7%) over their last five games having scored at least one power play goal in four of those five games. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes penalty kill has gone 28-for-33 (84.8%) over the last 10 contests keeping the opponent without a power play goal in six of those 10 games.
Midterm Ranked: Three Hurricanes players were ranked by NHL Central Scouting on the Midterm Rankings on January 12th. Kyle Heger (67th), Gavin Lesiuk (117th) and Nathan Maloney (220th) were all ranked among North American skaters. Of the three, Maloney was the lone player not ranked by Central Scouting on the Preliminary Players to Watch List in October.
Hey, Hegs: The ‘Canes announced on January 7th the acquisition of draft eligible defenceman Kyle Heger along with a conditional fourth-round draft pick in 2028 from the Medicine Hat Tigers in exchange for 19-year-old forward Luke Cozens and a conditional fourth-round draft pick in 2028. Heger made his Hurricanes debut on January 7th against the Seattle Thunderbirds.
All Hail Oli: Lethbridge announced the acquisition of 2007-born forward Oli Chenier from the Prince Albert Raiders in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick in 2026 on January 5th. Chenier appeared in 148 regular season games with the Raiders amassing 48 points (17g-31a) over three seasons. The Winnipeg, MB product was originally a third-round draft pick by Prince Albert in 2022.
OT Perfection: The ‘Canes enter tonight having posted a perfect 5-0 record this season in games decided in overtime this season. Lethbridge has posted a 99-88 record with 96 ties all-time in overtime in their history. The five OT victories this season is tied for second in the WHL lead with the Medicine Hat Tigers, one back of the Prince George Cougars who have six OT wins this year.
Bronze Medalist: Hurricanes forward Mykolas Skadauskas earned a Bronze medal at the World Junior Championship Division II B tournament with Lithuania. The 18-year-old appeared in five games collecting three points (1g-2a) along with a plus-1 rating and two penalty minutes. Skadauskas has three assists in 17 games this year with the ‘Canes.
Veteran Adds: On Friday, December 12th, the Hurricanes signed veterans WHLers Andrew Petruk and Fraser Leonard from the British Columbia Hockey League. The overage forward Petruk had appeared in 19 games split between the Langley Rivermen and Vernon Vipers while the 19-year-old Leonard had skated in 24 games with the Prince George Spruce Kings this season. The duo both made their ‘Cane debuts on December 12th against the Saskatoon Blades at SaskTel Centre.
