GAME DAY: Hurricanes Open Homestand Against Defending Champs
Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes open a four-game homestand tonight at 7:00pm as they welcome the defending WHL Champion Moose Jaw Warriors to the VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
The Hurricanes (3-1-0-0) enter after suffering their first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon falling 3-1 in Calgary to the Hitmen. Leo Braillard scored the lone goal in the game while Harrison Meneghin made 26-saves in his season debut. Lethbridge was outshot 29-20 in the game and went 1/3 on the power play and 5/7 on the penalty kill. The ‘Canes enter tonight with a 2-0-0-0 record at home this season.
The Warriors (1-2-1-0) have collected points in back-to-back games after suffering a 4-3 overtime loss on Sunday in Regina against the Pats. Aiden Ziprick, Owen Berge and Pavel McKenzie scored in the defeat while Jackson Unger made 24-saves. Moose Jaw outshot Regina 33-28 in the game. The Warriors have posted an 0-1-1-0 record on the road so far this season.
Tonight will be the first of five meetings on the season between the Hurricanes and Warriors; Lethbridge posted a 3-2-0-0 record against Moose Jaw in five meetings last season. VS. WARRIORS: Tonight will be the first of five meetings on the season between the Hurricanes and Warriors. Last year, Lethbridge posted a 3-2-0-0 record in five games against Moose Jaw including posting a 2-0-0-0 record at home. NEWS & NOTES:
Thru 4: The Hurricanes enter tonight with a 3-1-0-0 record (6 points) on the season after four games. The ‘Canes are 2-0-0-0 at home and 1-1-0-0 on the road so far this season. In 2023-2024, Lethbridge had posted a 3-1-0-0 record after four games.
Deja-Vu: The 2024-2025 season marked the second straight year the Hurricanes won their first three games of the season before suffering their first loss in their fourth game. Lethbridge has only started the season with three straight wins three times dating back to the 2008-2009 season.
Eddy’s Ready: Brayden Edwards has been terrific in the first two games since returning from Detroit Red Wings training camp. The overage forward has racked up five points (1g-4a) along with four penalty minutes in the first two games while going nearly 53% in the faceoff circle.
Four Return: The Hurricanes received four members of their team back from NHL Training Camps last week. Brayden Edwards (Detroit), Miguel Marques (Nashville), Noah Chadwick (Toronto) and Harrison Meneghin (Tampa Bay) all returned from camps. Landen Ward (Ottawa) returned last week.
Strong PK: Lethbridge’s penalty kill has been strong to start the season. The ‘Canes PK opened the season with 11-consecutive kills before allowing a goal. The Hurricanes have gone 15-for-17 on the penalty kill for a kill rate of 88.2%, ranking third in the WHL. Lethbridge finished third on the kill during the 2023-2024 regular season with a PK% of 81.1%.
Super Six: The Hurricanes announced that six prospects including Tyden Lafournaise (MB), Reid Soper (AB), Leif Oaten (AB), Colt Carter (AB), Jake Evans (SK) and Matteo Di Stefano (BC) will all represent their Province’s at the 2024 WHL Cup. The tournament will take place in Red Deer from October 23rd until 27th.
WHL Award: Rookie goaltender Koen Cleaver was named the WHL’s Goaltender of the Week for opening weekend. The Port Alberni, BC, product was terrific making 30-saves for his first WHL victory on Saturday in Red Deer against the Rebels. Cleaver posted a 0.95 goals against average and a sparkling .968 save percentage in his lone start.
Sweet-16: The Hurricanes currently have two 16-year-old players on their roster: Chase Petersen and Gavin Lesiuk. The pair were both second round selections by the ‘Canes in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft. The duo combined for four points (3g-1a) in the pre-season for the Hurricanes.
New Captain: On August 30th, the Hurricanes announced Noah Chadwick as the 32nd Captain in team history. The Toronto Maple Leaf prospect succeeds outgoing captain Joe Arntsen who served for three seasons. Chadwick served as an Alternate Captain in 2023-2024. The Saskatoon, SK, product recorded a career-high 56 points (12g-44a) in 66 games last season.
