GAME DAY: Hurricanes Open 2024-2025 Season Against Oil Kings
Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes open the 2024-2025 regular season against the Edmonton Oil Kings tonight at 7:00pm at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena in the Dairy Queen Home Opener.
The Hurricanes finished the ENMAX Pre-Season with a 2-2-0-0 record. Lethbridge earned both of their victories against the Medicine Hat Tigers, most recently a 6-3 win last Sunday on the road. The ‘Canes outscored the opposition 15-14 in the four game exhibition season while going 1-1-0-0 on home ice. Kooper Gizowski led all ‘Canes scorers with five points (2g-3a) in two games.
The Oil Kings posted a 3-1-0-0 record during their four-game pre-season schedule. Edmonton played all four of their games at neutral site locations, most recently suffering a 5-2 loss on Sunday afternoon in Calgary to the Hitmen at Siksika Deerfoot Sportsplex. The Oil Kings were led offensively by rookie standout Joe Iginla who finished third among WHL scoring during the exhibition season with seven points (3g-4a) in four games.
Tonight will be the first of eight head-to-head meetings between the Hurricanes and Oil Kings; Lethbridge posted a 3-3-0-0 record against Edmonton during the 2023-2024 regular season gong 1-2-0-0 at home. VS. OIL KINGS: Tonight will be the first of eight meetings during the regular season between the Hurricanes and Oil Kings. Lethbridge posted a 3-3-0-0 record against Edmonton during the 2023-2024 season, including going 1-2-0-0 at home and 2-1-0-0 on the road. Home Opener: The Hurricanes open the 2024-2025 regular season tonight as they welcome the Edmonton Oil Kings in their 38th home opener. Lethbridge has posted a 22-12-0-1 record with two ties all-time in their home openers while going 19-16-0-1 with one tie all-time in their season opening game. Against the Oil Kings, the ‘Canes are 1-1-0-0 all-time in home opening games with their lone win coming in 2009-2010.
Tune Up Done: Lethbridge ended their 2024 ENMAX Pre-Season with a 2-2-0-0 record after ending the exhibition schedule with a 6-3 win in Medicine Hat against the Tigers. The ‘Canes two victories both came against the Tigers while suffering losses to the Red Deer Rebels and Calgary Hitmen.
Goals Galore: During the pre-season, the Hurricanes scored 15 goals in four games as they averaged 3.75 goals per game. Lethbridge allowed 14 goals in the exhibition season for an average of 3.50 goals against per game. During the 2023-2024 season, the ‘Canes averaged 3.10 goals per game.
Pre-Season Leader: Kooper Gizowski had two good offensive showings in the pre-season leading the Hurricanes in scoring with five points (2g-3a) in two games. The 19-year-old had a three-point effort (1g-2a) in the ‘Canes final exhibition game in Medicine Hat. He had 28 points (16g-12a) in 64 games for Lethbridge last season.
Sweet-16: To open the 2024-2025 regular season, the Hurricanes are carrying three 16-year-old players: Kai Anderson, Gavin Lesiuk and Chase Petersen. All three players produced multiple points during the pre-season combing for five goals and seven points.
Gone Campin’: Four Hurricanes players are currently attending NHL Main Camps. Drafted players Noah Chadwick (Toronto Maple Leafs), Miguel Marques (Nashville Predators) and Harrison Meneghin (Tampa Bay Lightning) are attending camps while free-agent invite Brayden Edwards (Detroit Red Wings) is also at Main Camp. Landen Ward (Ottawa Senators) also attended his first NHL Rookie Camp.
New Captain: On August 30th, the Hurricanes announced Noah Chadwick as the 32nd Captain in team history. The Toronto Maple Leaf prospect succeeds outgoing captain Joe Arntsen who served for three seasons. Chadwick served as an Alternate Captain in 2023-2024. The Saskatoon, SK, product recorded a career-high 56 points (12g-44a) in 66 games last season.
Duo Signed: On September 2nd, the Hurricanes announced the signings of 2009-born forwards Matteo Di Stefano and Jake Evans to WHL Scholarship and Development Agreements. Evans was a fourth-round pick (84th overall) while Di Stefano was taken in the sixth-round (124th overall) in the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft.
2023-2024 Review: The ‘Canes finished the 2023-2024 regular season with a 33-28-7-0 record finishing seventh in the Eastern Conference standings. It marked the eighth straight campaign that the ‘Canes recorded 33-or-more victories during the regular season. The ‘Canes went 18-10-6-0 at home and 15-18-1-0 on the road last year.
