GAME DAY: Hurricanes Look for Third Straight Win; Host Hitmen in Final of Four Game Homestand
Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes will end a four-game homestand tonight at 7:00pm as they welcome the Calgary Hitmen at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
The Hurricane (14-33-0-1) enter on a two-game winning streak after earning a 5-2 victory on Wednesday over the Saskatoon Blades. Oli Chenier, Owen Berge, Hudson Kibblewhite, Kade Duell and Kyle Heger scored in the win while Koen Cleaver was named first star making 36-saves. Lethbridge improved to 2-1-0-0 on their current homestand with the victory as the ‘Canes enter with a 9-15-0-1 record at home this year.
The Hitmen (25-12-6-1) enter on a three-game winning streak after downing the Edmonton Oil Kings 5-2 on Wednesday at Scotiabank Saddledome. Julien Maze scored twice while Landon Amrhein, Axel Hurtig and Andrei Molgachev scored in the win; Eric Tu made 32-saves in the win which improved the Hitmen record to 7-2-1-0 in their last ten games. Calgary enters tonight with a 12-5-4-1 record on the road this season.
Tonight will be the seventh of eight meetings on the season between the Hurricanes and Hitmen; Lethbridge has posted a 2-4-0-0 record against Calgary this season. VS. HITMEN: Tonight will be the seventh of eight head-to-head meetings between the Hurricanes and Hitmen. So far this season, Lethbridge has posted a 2-4-0-0 record against Calgary while having gone 2-6-1-0 in eight meetings during the 2024-2025 season. The Hurricanes defeated the Hitmen in seven games in the second-round of the WHL Playoffs last spring. Thru 48: The Hurricanes enter tonight with a 14-33-0-1 record (29 points) on the season after 48 games. The ‘Canes are 9-15-0-1 at home and 5-18-0-0 on the road. In 2024-2025, Lethbridge had posted a
30-16-1-1 record after 48 games. The ‘Canes have posted a 3-8-0-0 record in the month of January. Lethbridge is on pace to record 20 victories this year.
Back-to-Back: The ‘Canes enter tonight having earned back-to-back victories after victories over the Regina Pats and Saskatoon Blades. It marks the first time since November 12th and 14th when the Hurricanes were victorious in Penticton and Kelowna that Lethbridge has won two consecutive games. It also marked just the second time this year the Hurricanes have won two in a row; they have not won three-straight games at any point this season.
Surging Special Teams: Lethbridge’s special teams have been strong of late. The ‘Canes power play has gone 9-for-27 (33.3%) over their last eight games having scored at least one power play goal in six of those eight games. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes penalty kill has gone 37-for-45 (82.2%) over the last 13 contests keeping the opponent without a power play goal in six of those 12 games.
Top Prospect: Hurricanes defenceman Kyle Heger was named as one of 15 rearguards from the WHL to take part in the 2026 WHL Prospects Game in Langley on February 18th at the Langley Events Centre. The Minnesota product will represent Team East in the game. The WHL Prospects Game will be the first held in over 25-years dating back to the 1999-2000 season.
New Leadership Group: The ‘Canes announced a new leadership group for the remainder of the 2025-2026 season following the WHL Trade Deadline. Owen Berge, Kayden Longley, Carsen Adair and Hudson Kibblewhite will serve as Alternate Captains for the rest of the season while Lethbridge will go without a Captain for the rest of the season.
Midterm Ranked: Three Hurricanes players were ranked by NHL Central Scouting on the Midterm Rankings on January 12th. Kyle Heger (67th), Gavin Lesiuk (177th) and Nathan Maloney (220th) were all ranked among North American skaters. Of the three, Maloney was the lone player not ranked by Central Scouting on the Preliminary Players to Watch List in October.
All Hail Oli: Lethbridge announced the acquisition of 2007-born forward Oli Chenier from the Prince Albert Raiders in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick in 2026 on January 5th. Chenier appeared in 148 regular season games with the Raiders amassing 48 points (17g-31a) over three seasons. The Winnipeg, MB product was originally a third-round draft pick by Prince Albert in 2022.
OT Perfection: The ‘Canes enter tonight having posted a perfect 5-0 record this season in games decided in overtime this season. Lethbridge has posted a 99-88 record with 96 ties all-time in overtime in their history. The five OT victories this season is tied for second in the WHL lead with the Medicine Hat Tigers, one back of the Prince George Cougars who have six OT wins this year.
