2024 ENMAX Training Camp – Day 1 Recap
Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes opened the 2024 ENMAX Training Camp on Thursday at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
The new camp schedule, which included 53 players and two groups, began with a practice session for each team followed by dry-land training and a skills development session. The ‘Canes competed in their first of four scrimmages through camp on Thursday evening with Team Red downing Team Blue by a 4-1 score.
The scrimmage game consisted of two 20-minute periods. The two teams had a feeling-out process early in the game with both squads looking to settle in for the first five minutes. Team Red started to take over the middle part of the first period with sustained pressure in the Team Blue zone before Leo Braillard sniped his first goal of camp at the 11:49 mark beating Brody Rotar, who was sharp early, to make it 1-0; Cameron Norrie earned the lone assists on the goal. Team Blue’s Lucas Jacobson was assessed a hooking penalty at the 15:49 mark, but Team Red failed to generate a single shot with the extra man as the first period closed with Team Red in front by a 1-0 score. Koen Cleaver who started the game for Team Red was terrific turning aside all eight shots he saw in the period as Team Red outshot Team Blue 13-8.
Team Red began the second period with a bang adding to their lead just 42-seconds into the game as Cohen Pentney finished his first goal of the training camp to make it 2-0; Gavin Lesiuk earned the helper on the goal. Team Red continued to pour the pressure on Rotar and Team Blue and scored two quick goals just 2:24 apart to open a 4-0 lead. Matteo Di Stefano buried his first goal at the 4:25 mark to make it 3-0 before Trae Johnson found the net finishing off a pass from Landen Ward. Team Blue pushed back in the back-half of the period as they looked to get on the board and with 6:41 remaining in the game, Chase Petersen banged home a loose puck at the side of the net to break Cleaver’s shutout bid, closing the lead to 4-1 – Cooper Sydor was credited with the assist on the goal. Team Blue continued to press and came close to adding another when Kash Andresen wired a wrist-shot off the crossbar. Team Red held on for the 4-1 victory to open the ENMAX Training Camp. Team Red outshot Team Blue 27-23 in the contest.
