Training Camp Opening Day
94s and 95s take to the ice as 2010 Hurricanes Training Camp opens
Lethbridge, AB – Though the day brought only registration and practice time for the 94 and 95-born players, the excitement and intencity cranked up quickly as the rookies hit the ice for the first time as the 2010 Lethbridge Hurricanes Training Camp began with a bang Thursday at Adams Ice Centre.
69 of the camps expected 70 paticipants reported to camp Thursday, with only Russian born Alex Kuvaev yet to arrive in Canada. Kuvaev is expected to arrive in Lethbridge tomorrow evening and expected to play Saturday and Sunday in the Hurricanes intersquad tournament.
A sizable group of Hurricanes fans made an apperence to get their first look at the future of the Lethbridge Hurricanes – the 94 and 95-born players as they practiced as members of Team A and B. The action heats up tomorrow as the C and D teams (veterans) will take to the ice for the first time in camp.

The Hurricanes will play a series of matchups tomorrow before mixing the rookies and veterans together (Teams 1,2,3 and 4) for a four team Intersquad tournament on Saturday and Sunday. The United Way of Lethbridge will be on hand to take donations on entry for these two days. Also note that rosters for Teams 1,2,3 and 4 will be available only at the arena and will be made available at the rink with any donation to the Lethbridge United Way. The Hurricanes encourage you – the fans to support this great cause.

Lethbridge, AB – Hurricanes Training Camp shifted into the fun part as the Hurricanes started two a days with all members of camp taking to the ice for practices and scrimmages. The veteran teams – C & D took to the ice in the morning for practice before Teams A & B, made up of 94 and 95-born players kicked off the scrimmages.
Game 1 – Team A vs. Team B
In the first game of the day, Team B – coached by veteran scouts Gerry Klinkhammer and Tim Lollar blasted their way to a 7-0 win over Team B coached by Scouts Gary Hanson and Greg Heakes. Team B was led to victory by Jaimen Yakubowski (2G), Mitch Guiel (1G,2A), Jamal Watson (1G,2A) and Lenny Hackman (1G,1A). Goaltenders Ryan Ferguson and Luke Lee-Knight combined for the shutout while the highlight of the game came with blue chip prospect Macoy Erkamps’ goal as he took the puck to the slot off the half wall and roofed a shot for his first tally of Training Camp. Russell Maxwell, the brother of current Hurricanes overage Mitch Maxwell tallied the other Team B goal after being moved from Team A due to an injury. Teams A & B would meet again later in the day with the goaltenders switching sides. Scratched due to injury from scrimmage was forward and Hurricanes 2009 bantam draft pick Ryley Bennefield as well as local 94-born d-man Mark Eremenko. No word yet on when or if these players will return to action.

In the second game of the day, Teams C & D – the veterans took to the ice with Hurricanes Assistant Coach Chris Chisamore (Team C) and Associate Coach Matt Kabayama (Team D) at the helm. Team D was led to a 5-3 win after newcomer Brady Ramsay tallied a hat trick to lead his team to victory. Veteran Austin Fyten showed good chemistry with Ramsay notching a three point day (1G,2A) while another rookie Mitch Owsley had a two point day (1G,1A). Brennan Yadlowski (1G,1A), Michael Sofillas and Jordan Baillie tallied for Team C in a losing cause while Max Ross tallied a pair of assists.

Game 3 – Team A vs. Team B
The final game of the day went to Team A who bounced back with a 5-4 OT win on the strength of a OT winner by camp invite Zach Mantyka. Craig Leverton helped to lead a furious charge by Team A with a pair of goals with under five minutes to play in the third. Chris Thorimbert tallied two points (1G,1A) while U.S. born import Chris Stovall opened the scoring for Team A. Team B put in a strong performance as Mitch Guiel had yet another solid game with three points (1G,2A) while Russell Maxwell (1G,1A) and Luke Scheunert (2A) each had multi point efforts. Hurricanes 1st round pick Jay Merkley also scored for Team B in the loss. 95-born Jamal Watson, who also impressed was forced to leave the game with an injury in the second half.

Extra Camp News and Notes:
– From Russia with Love: Alex Kuvaev, the Canes selection in the 2010 CHL Import draft will make his on ice debut Saturday after arriving in Lethbridge late Friday evening. Hailing from Moscow, Russia – Kuvaev is a 93-born – 6’3, 190 pound forward will be eligible for the 2011 NHL Draft. He played for Team Russia at the 2010 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Timmins. ON this past winter and played this past season for Vityaz Chekhov of the Russian Minor Hockey League (MHL)
– Born in the U.S.A.: The Canes currently have a pair of U.S. born prospects attending camp, both of them 95-born forwards – Chris Stovall who hails from Grapevine, TX and Trent Dillinger who hails from Gillette, WY
– Sibling Rivalry: Cane Training Camp is currently playing host to three pairs of brothers current Hurricanes Mitch Maxwell, Brennan Yadlowski and Philip Tot have been joined on the camp rosters by their brothers Russell, Austin and David.
– Early Departure: After what was an impressive Training Camp – Hurricanes 1st round selection Jay Merkley will depart from camp as planned due to previous engagements with the Calgary Midget AAA Buffs tryouts.

Lethbridge, AB – The games are upon us! Lethbridge Hurricanes Training Camp was headlined by the Intersquad Tournament on Saturday at Adams Ice Centre as all camp participants were grouped together into four new teams. In the end, Team 2 and Team 4 fared the best and will face off tomorrow for the Intersquad Tournament Championship at 12:30 PM.
Game 1 – Team 1 vs. Team 2 – 9:00-10:30AM
Reners and Brolly lead Team 2 to 8-3 win; Bennefield tallies one in 2010 camp debut
The Lethbridge Hurricanes first selection in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft – Ryley Bennefield made his 2010 Training Camp debut on Saturday morning after returning from a foot injury that has held him out of the first two days. Bennefield got things started with the first goal of the day for Team 2 just a minute and a half into the game. Mark Reners (2G) and Craig Leverton also tallied in the first half while Shane Brolly (2G) and Hayden Goderis both scored to make it 3-2 Team 2 going into the second half. Brolly’s second of the game came after Jordan Baillie (1G,1A) notched his first of the tournament early in the second half to make it 4-3 but from there Team 2 took control with four unanswered goals from Chris Thorimbert, Landon Oslanski (1G,1A), Reners second of the game and Mitch Owsley while veteran Jacob Berglund had a pair of assists in the 8-3 win.

Holy McKechnie! McKechnie notches hat trick in losing cause as Team 3 takes win in shootout
Another Cane prospect made his much anticipated Training Camp debut as Alex Kuvaev, (Koo-Vy-Ev) the Canes only pick in the 2010 CHL Import Draft played a solid game as a member of Team 4. It was the Navy Team 3 who jumped ahead to an early lead 2-0 after the first half on the strength of goals by Brett Printz (2G,1A) and Michael Sofillas. Team 3 then extended their lead as Brody Sutter (2G,1A) tallied before Veteran Austin Fyten then answered back a minute later to put Team 4 on the board. Last season’s leading goal scorer Mitch Maxwell tallied to make it 4-1 for Team 3 before Sam McKechnie (3G) notched his first to make it 4-2. Sutter scored his second to extend the lead to 5-2 before Texas born forward Chris Stovall answered back for Team 4 again. Jared Marchi then scored his first of the game with just under eight minutes to play which looked to seal it away 6-3 for Team 3… Before a late charge from Team 4 who rattled off four unanswered goals from David Tot, the newcomer Kuvaev and McKechnie’s second and third of the game – McKechnie’s hat trick goal gave Team 4 their first lead of the game with 2:46 left in the game. But less than 30 seconds later a reeling Team 3 notched the equalizer with Printz’s second of the game to force OT. After a fast paced OT period the game went to a shootout in which the Team 3 sharpshooters managed to all score with the winner coming off the stick of rookie Lenny Hackman for the 8-7 shootout victory.

Bakke, Brolly and Baillie lead Team 2 in comeback win to book spot in Championship
Team 1 and Team 2 were back at it again later in the afternoon as Team 1 looked to rebound from their earlier 8-3 loss. Eager to get at the they quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead less then 30 seconds into the game off the stick of local Russell Maxwell. Jacob Berglund (1G,1A) would even things up just minutes later before Jaimen Yakubowski would give Team 1 a lead which they would hold for the rest of the half and well into the second. Shane Brolly and 95-born defenseman Joel Topping added to the lead to give Team 1 a 4-1 lead with 20 minutes remaining. But Team 2 would show a little resiliency as they notched unanswered goals the game winner and insurance coming with under three minutes to go. The comeback was led by goal scorers Craig Leverton, Brady Bakke (2G, 1A), Mitch Owsley, Ryley Bennefield and Jordan Baillie who notched three assists in their 6-4 win advancing them to the Championship Game on Sunday.

In another offensive explosion Team 3 and 4 combined for 14 goals and a tie breaker in the final game of the afternoon. Team 4 needed the win after being narrowly edged out by Team 3 in an 8-7 shootout loss earlier in the day. Team 3 came flying out of the gates and looked to have wrapped up a spot in the final after posting a 6-3 lead after the first period. The Team 3 charge was led by veteran Brody Sutter (3G) posting a hat trick while newcomer Josh Kluck (2G) had a pair and defenseman Daniel Johnston (1G) once again showed his offensive ability. Team 4 stuck with it and stayed within striking distance in the first with goals from Texan Chris Stovall (2G), Austin Fyten and Graham Hood (1G,1A). Team 4 then poured on the gas as facing elimination – Sam McKechnie, Brady Ramsay, Jared Jerome, Adam Henry each tallied unassisted markers before Alex Kuvaev put it away to give Team 4 a 8-6 win. With the win, Team 4 forced a tie breaker overtime period to decide which Team would advance to the Championship. As if on cue, Kuvaev made a nice move to the inside while crossing the blue line before sniping a top cheese shot to advance Team 4 to Sunday’s Championship game.

The Tournament will wrap up tomorrow morning as Team 1 and Team 3 will play in the third place game at 9:00 AM followed by the Championship game between Team 2 and Team 4 at 12:30 PM. Due to injuries and departures – both Cam Braes and Hayden Goderis will be moved from Team 1 to Team 3 for this match up which will be played in a 4 on 4 format. Meanwhile in the Championship, Team 2 will be led by veterans Jacob Berglund, Mike Reddington, Landon Oslanski, Mark Reners and Phil Tot while Team 4 will get a boost from veterans Austin Fyten, Reid Jackson, Derek Ryckman, Graham Hood and the wildcard Russian Alex Kuvaev.
The United Way of Lethbridge will still be on hand to take donations on entry for these two games.
