RECAP: Hitmen Score Four Unanswered in Comeback Victory Over Oil Kings
The Calgary Hitmen returned to the win column Friday night with a comeback victory, defeating the Edmonton Oil Kings 5-3 at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Calgary erased a 3-1 deficit with four unanswered goals against their division rivals to take a 4-0 season series lead.
Edmonton struck early, with Blake Fiddler finding the back of the net just 15 seconds into the opening period. The Hitmen responded quickly on the power play, with Julien Maze netting his 30th goal of the season to even the score. The Oil Kings regained control with back-to-back goals from Kayden Stroeder and Ethan MacKenzie to take a 3-1 lead.
At the tail end of the period, Kale Dach cut the deficit to one, giving Calgary momentum heading into the second period. Dach delivered again late in the middle frame, scoring with just 14 seconds remaining to tie the game 3-3 and record his second goal of the night.
Midway through the third period, Landon Amrhein gave Calgary its first lead of the contest, burying the go ahead goal to make it 4-3. With Edmonton’s net empty late in regulation, Andrei Molgachev sealed the victory with his 22nd goal of the season to secure the 5-3 final.
With the win, Calgary sits fourth in the Eastern Conference, closing the gap on Edmonton to six points with a game in hand.
The Hitmen head to the Alberta capital tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 14 for a rematch with the Oil Kings. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at Rogers Place. Calgary then opens a five-game homestand with a Family Day Monday, Feb. 16. matinee against the U.S. Division leading Everett Silvertips. Game time is 1:00 p.m. at Scotiabank Saddledome.
