PLAYOFF GAME DAY: Game 3 Wednesday April 2 at Spokane
Spokane, WA – It’s the most important game of the year for the Vancouver Giants tonight, as they’ll play Game 3 of their opening round playoff series with the Spokane Chiefs on the road at 7:05 p.m.
The Chiefs lead the best-of-seven series 2-0.
Vancouver lost Game 1 by a score of 4-1 and nearly completed an incredible comeback in Game 2 on Sunday, but eventually fell 7-5.
The Giants scored five goals in a row in the third period, turning a comfortable 6-0 Spokane lead into a very tentative 6-5 one with 3:10 to go in regulation. The Chiefs were just able to hold on after Berkly Catton hit the empty net with 7.5 seconds left.
Cameron Schmidt led the way offensively for the Giants with four points on a goal and three helpers. Adam Titlbach, Connor Levis, Colton Roberts and Tyler Thorpe each found the back of the net for Vancouver as well.
As is usually the case, the focus for the Giants is on being as consistent as possible.
“You need 60 minutes against this team,” Giants Associate Coach Adam Maglio said. “It’s a fast team. They transition really quick. You need to be focused in every shift, every moment. Details matter. All the cliche’s, but even more against this team.”
WHL scoring leader Andrew Cristall will not play for Spokane in Game 3 after he received a one game suspension for a cross-checking major in the third period of Sunday’s game.
“There’s a little bit of focus on the other team, there has to be in playoffs – in any game – but it’s more about what are we doing tonight?” Maglio said. “Are we executing our game plan? Are we competing for pucks? Are we working as hard as we can? At the end of the day, it comes down to work, mindset, want and will.”
