2021 Vancouver Giants Chevrolet Training Camp: Day 2
Day 2 of Chevrolet Vancouver Giants Training Camp consisted of morning practice, fitness testing, and skills work for both Team Lucic and Team Gallagher.
The primary focus of Day 2 was to “set the tone” for the remainder of the Camp experience, and to a man – The Giants hopefuls bought in.
WELCOME TO LADNER MAZ..
Despite the fact that 2005-born defenceman Mazden Leslie appeared in 17 games last season with the Giants in Kamloops/Kelowna, this is in fact his first WHL Training Camp. Ahead of his first practice with Team Gallagher, Leslie spoke about the week leading up to Camp and the confidence he gained from last season with the Giants and his summer of training.

SIM READY TO TAKE NEXT STEP…
Despite the fact that he’s only appeared in 11 games in the past two seasons, 2003-born goaltender Drew Sim is the most experienced WHL goaltender currently in camp with the Vancouver Giants. Sim was originally selected by the Giants in Round 3 of the 2018 WHL Prospects Draft, and after an impressive summer of training, he’s ready to make his mark.
The Giants goaltending in 2021-2022 should be strong with Drew Sim and Vegas Golden Knights prospect Jesper Vikman (2002) competing for starts. Earlier today Drew Sim spoke with Dan O’Connor about his current physical/mental confidence, his summer training, his 2021 takeaways, and his early budding friendship with Jesper Vikman.

HORNING SOAKING IT ALL IN…
For 2001-born defenceman Connor Horning, this marks his sixth and final WHL Training Camp. However this also marks his first Camp as a member of the Vancouver Giants. Ahead of his second ice-time of the day, Horning spoke with Dan O’Connor about some of the youth that’s on display, some of the impactful 20-year-olds from his previous seasons, and his team expectations.

OSTAPCHUK REFLECTS…
2021 has been unforgettable for 2003-born forward Zack Ostapchuk. After an impressive sophomore campaign with the Giants inside the Kamloops hub, the 6’3″ forward from St. Albert, AB was drafted 39th overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 2021 NHL Draft. But before the draft and before any of that, he was once a fresh-faced rookie attending his first WHL Training Camp.

HALABURDA’S QUIET CONFIDENCE..
As far as first impressions go, it’s hard to top what 2005-born forward Ty Halaburda has displayed early on. The Victoria, B.C. native is early into his first WHL Training Camp with the Giants, but carries himself with the confidence and a maturity beyond his years.
