About Robert Sebastian
Legendary Canadian Aboriginal artist is at his full artistic power.
In keeping with the reverence Indigenous and enlightened people have for their elders, Sebastian has soared through the hardships of life and the lessons of art and experience. Today he is one of the masters of the West Coast Aboriginal style of art so richly coveted at home and around the world.
He was born into a river of art and song, thanks to his family and community. He grew up in two main locations: Prince George, the urban capital of northern British Columbia and traditional territory of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation, and Hazelton, the ancestral homeland of his Gitxsan people (he is from the House of Spookx) who taught him art, music, dance, and communication in all its forms. He has been a journalist, a dancer and music performer, the leader of his own dance troupe, and all of it has informed his visual art for which he is internationally recognized.
Career highlights include his works in the collection of the British Royal Family; in the University of Victoria’s Maltwood Museum and Carleton University’s George MacDonald Collection; five of Prince George’s international sister cities have been gifted his work as official municipal presents; his work has been used for books and film; the Montreal Expos and Vancouver Canucks have commissioned his art; as a cultural ambassador he has appeared for international dignitaries in China, and Australia.
All of his work, cultural and artistic comes from the Creator. He looks to “the Great Chief in the vast heavens” for his daily guidance and can’t wait to feel what inspirations are provided next from that power bigger than himself.
