[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Spokane Chiefs forward Tyus Sparks was selected in the 4th<\/sup> round, 101st<\/sup> overall, by the Washington Capitals in the 2026 Upper Deck NHL Draft on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n

The 6\u20190\u201d forward from Meridian, Idaho, joined the Chiefs through a mid-season trade in January, 2026 and closed out the season with more points than any other Chief with 65 points and 28 goals. In his 29 games as a Chief, he scored 12 times and assisted on 16 others.<\/p>\n

Sparks becomes the second highest selected Idaho-born player in NHL Draft history after former Chief Bobby House was selected 66th overall in 1991. Sparks is the fourth player born in Idaho ever to be drafted, after former Chief Bear Hughes (148th overall in 2020 by WSH), Merrick Madsen (162nd overall in 2013 by PHI), and Kevin Kantee (188th overall in 2002 by CHI).<\/p>\n

Sparks was also the only player to score more than once during the WHL Prospects Game presented by Showpass last February, an event that featured the top draft eligible prospects in the WHL. Sparks also finished in the top 20 prospects in seven of the 15 tests at the annual NHL Combine earlier this month.<\/p>\n

He becomes the fourth Chief ever to be selected by the Washington Capitals, the first since Hughes in 2020.<\/p>\n

Sparks joins Chase Harrington (Calgary, 2nd<\/sup> round, 36th<\/sup> overall) as Chiefs drafted on Saturday in the 2026 NHL Upper Deck NHL Draft.<\/p>\n

The 6\u20191\u201d Prince George, BC native recorded 28 goals and 57 points in 61 games in the 2025-26 season, a career high for the Chief. He also led the Chiefs with 105 career penalty minutes. Those numbers led to Harrington being named Spokane\u2019s Co-Player of the Year last season. In his career, he has played 194 regular season games recording 130 points, and 173 PIMs.<\/p>\n

Harrington is the fourth Chief ever to be selected by the Flames, the first since Mitch Wahl \u00a0who also went in the second round in 2008.<\/p>\n

Harrington was originally the Chiefs 8th<\/sup> overall pick in the 2022 WHL Prospects draft. He was also the top-rated U.S. division plater in the final rankings, coming in at 26th<\/sup> among North American Skaters.<\/p>\n

The 2026 WHL Prospects Game presented by Showpass pitted the most highly acclaimed and NHL Draft-eligible prospects from the WHL\u2019s Eastern Conference against prospects from the WHL\u2019s Western Conference. The game was held on February 18, 2026, at the Langley Events Centre located in British Columbia.<\/p>\n

Spokane Chiefs Chase Harrington, Tyus Sparks, and Brody Gillespie all played for the Western Conference. Sparks scored the first two goals for team Western. Gillespie scored the third goal, which tied the game during the third period.<\/p>\n

Starting June 24, fans can bid on items in the 2026 WHL Prospects Game Auction powered by DASH. The last day to bid is Thursday, July 2.<\/p>\n

Fans will have the chance to own a piece of hockey history. All jerseys are one-a-kind and were produced specifically for the prospects game. Game worn socks are paired with each jersey.<\/p>\n

The Chiefs will travel to Everett and play in the Preseason Classic presented by LiUNA 292 and take on Portland on Friday, September 4th and Seattle on Saturday, September 5th.<\/p>\n

The following weekend, the Chiefs are slated to travel to Kennewick for the Tri-City Preseason Tournament presented by Gesa Credit Union. Spokane will face Portland on Friday, September 11th and the host Americans on Saturday, September 12th.<\/p>\n

Spokane will then begin the regular season with a trip back down to face their U.S. Division rival Tri-City Americans on Saturday, September 19th.\u00a0The home portion of the regular season will feature another match-up with Tri-City on Saturday, September 26th on Blue Moon Opening Night and pre-game party at Numerica Veterans Arena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The first round will take place Friday, June 26 with rounds two through seven going through Saturday, June 27.<\/p>\n

A very solid all-round winger with a strong two-way game. A coach’s player that can be utilized up and down a lineup and is capable to contribute in all situations. Makes an impression on both the power play and penalty kill. The type of player that works hard, battles and will stand up for his teammates. A very good skater with speed and quickness. He is smart away from the puck in both ends and shows good attention to detail.<\/em><\/p>\n

Harrington was the top-rated US-division player in the final rankings, clocking in at 26th<\/sup> among North American Skaters. He was originally Spokane\u2019s 8th<\/sup>-overall pick in the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft.<\/p>\n

Tyus Sparks<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sparks, a six-foot forward from Meridian, Idaho, joined the Spokane Chiefs in a mid-season trade in January 2026 and led the team with 28 goals and 65 points. In 29 games as a Chief, Sparks scored 12 times and helped on 16 others.\u00a0 Sparks netted twice for Team West in the inaugural WHL Prospects Game in Langley, B.C. earlier this year, the only player to score more than once in the showcase. The Meridian, Idaho native was originally selected eighth overall in the 2023 WHL U.S. Prospect Draft.<\/p>\n

NHL CSS Scouting Report<\/em><\/p>\n

A player that has really come a long way over the past season and a half. He was in and out of the lineup as a 16-year-old. He had a good offseason and showed that he is a top-six scoring\/playmaking type of winger in the WHL. Has a heavy shot and scores regularly from the half wall with a one timer on the power play. His play with the puck has improved and he has shown he can be an excellent play maker to go with the shot.<\/em><\/p>\n

Sparks finished at 37 among North American Skaters in the final NHL CSS rankings. The Idaho native was originally the 8th<\/sup> overall pick by Vancouver in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft.<\/p>\n

Brody Gillespie, F<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gillespie, a 6\u20191\u201d forward from Vancouver, Washington recorded a career-high in assists (17) and points (24) during the 2025-26 season while also potting seven goals. In 128 career games he recorded 15 goals, 20 assists, and 35 points, while adding six goals in 24 career WHL playoff games.<\/p>\n

Joining fellow forward Tyus Sparks on the scoresheet, Gillespie found the net at the 2026 WHL Prospects Game for Team West.<\/p>\n

The Chiefs finished 16 points ahead of the Americans a season ago enroute to securing the 6th playoff spot in the Western Conference, going 7-1 against their local rival. Spokane defeated the Americans in last season\u2019s home opener 3-0 featuring a Carter Esler shutout and a goal from Winnipeg Jets\u2019 prospect Owen Martin.<\/p>\n

\u201cBryce has had tremendous success at both the High School and Junior levels over the past few seasons. He is a competitive, athletic, poised and technically-sound goaltender in addition to being a good teammate and hard-worker on and off the ice,\u201d said Spokane Chiefs Assistant General Manager George Ross. \u201cWe are excited that Bryce has chosen Spokane to further his development and want to welcome the Francisco family to the Chiefs organization!\u201d<\/p>\n

The Hermantown, MN native played 27 games for Hermantown High School last season, maintaining a 2.69 GAA and .914 save percentage while winning 17 games.\u00a0 He earned the Frank Brimsek Award, an honor given to the state of Minnesota\u2019s top high school senior goaltender. Francisco played with Spokane Chiefs prospect Nikolai Zhukov (8th<\/sup>-Round, 2025 WHL Draft) at Hermantown High School.<\/p>\n

Francisco was 8-6-2 in 21 games for Team TDS Transportation in the Minnesota High School Elite Hockey League and played for the Bismarck Bobcats of the NAHL after his high school season, recording a 2.46 GAA and .904 save percentage in 11 games.<\/p>\n
