Moose Jaw, Sask. – The Swift Current Broncos earned a 6-3 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday night in Moose Jaw.
It was a high-octane game throughout as the two teams combined for 92 shots overall as the Broncos outshot the Warriors 48-44 in the game. Broncos Interim Head Coach Taras McEwen said this game was the team’s best sixty-minute effort to this point in the season.
“Just really happy with the guys, and the detail that we played with,” McEwen said. “And when we play the right way consistency, it leads to success.”
The Warriors got on the board first on a powerplay goal from Martin Rysavy, but that is the only time they held a lead as the Broncos would score three straight to take charge of the game. Brady Birnie scored on a powerplay for the Broncos to tie the game which was followed by Josh Filmon and Clarke Caswell scoring just over a minute apart to make it 3-1.
Another Warriors powerplay goal from Atley Calvert made it 3-2 late in the first, and another Calvert goal early in the second would tie the game but that’s as close as things got the rest of the way.
52 seconds after the Warriors had tied the game, Luke Mistelbacher regained the Broncos lead with his third of the year, while Ryan McCleary scored later in the second to give the Broncos the 5-3 lead. While the Warriors would pressure the Broncos through the third, Swift Current was able to hold the fort as Joey Rocha made 17 of his 41 saves in that third period.
Filmon added an empty netter late in the third to close things out for the Broncos. Mistelbacher also added two assists in the game after being elevated to a line with Connor Hvidston and Filmon.
“Real happy with him, that’s his most complete game, best game that I’ve seen being here in Swift,” McEwen said. “Just really happy and excited for him. He had a real focus on him the entire game which was good to see, and just his defensive zone play was impressive.”
The Broncos now improve to 12-10-1-0 on the year and are back in Moose Jaw for another meeting with Warriors on Tuesday.
