Saskatoon, Sask. – The Swift Current Broncos min two-game winning streak was snapped on Saturday night in Saskatoon with a 4-1 loss to the Blades.
The Broncos had a soldi start to the contest, gathering a few quality chances in the first few shifts, and outshooting the Blades 5-2 at one point in the first, but that flipped to the Blades favour after two penalties from the Broncos. The Blades ultimately fired 20 shots to Swift Current’s five in the first period, but Bronco netminder Joey Roacha stood tall.
Broncos Interim Head Coach Taras McEwen said things started to turn when they took penalties.
“They’re really passive in the neutral zone, and I thought we did a pretty good job of managing a good puck and getting pucks by them,” McEwen said. “I just thought the two penalties, the penalty kills took a lot of momentum away from us and got their shot total up.”
Brandon Lisowsky, and Egor Sidorov scored within a minute of each other midway through the second to make it 2-0 Blades, but that also only last about two minutes as Ryan McCleary scored for the Broncos who had a bit of momentum at that point.
However, the Broncos couldn’t quite capitalize on the chances they had later in the second and into the third as Sidorov scored in the third for the Blades to make it 3-1 before Trevor Wong added an empty netter.
“It was just a couple of misreads on the goals against,” McEwen added. “You have to stay patient, you have to stick to the gameplan for a full sixty, especially against the top teams and the top lines.”
Joey Rocha stopped 37 of 40 in the Bronco net in his second straight start. The Broncos are back in action on Friday when they visit Moose Jaw.
