The Kamloops Blazers capped off their road trip with a matchup against the Vancouver Giants Saturday night.
Kamloops turned to Logan Edmonstone between the pipes, while Vancouver went with Kelton Pyne.
Just minutes in, 16-year-old Asher Gingras opened the scoring, snapping a shot past Pyne for his second of the season to make it 1-0. The Blazers would then double their lead on the powerplay, when Nathan Behm found Jordan Keller off the rush, who wired it past Pyne making it 2-0.
Kamloops continued to apply pressure, generating quality chances from J.P. Hurlbert and Cooper Moore, but Pyne stood tall to keep the Giants within reach. Blazers’ defenceman Madden Tymchak then jumped up into the rush, looking for his first WHL goal, but was denied by Pyne. Vancouver began to find some momentum midway through the period, with Joe Iginla breaking into the offensive zone and firing a backhand, but Edmonstone answered with a clean glove save.
The Blazers would regain control when Joaquin Geras fired a point shot that went off the end boards right to Behm who buried it, extending the lead to 3-0. Behm joined the 30-goal club, alongside Tommy Lafreniere and J.P. Hurlbert. Kamloops wasn’t done there, as Ty Coupland ripped a one-timer from the hash marks past Pyne to cap off a dominant first period, sending the Blazers into the intermission up 4-0.
The second period opened wth pace, and Vancouver quickly earned a power play, generating pressure in the offensive zone. Edmonstone remained sharp, turning aside multiple looks from the Giants. Kamloops nearly struck shorthanded when Hurlbert beat Burke Hood, who had come on in relief of Pyne, but rang it off the post. The play continued to swing end-to-end through the middle of the frame, with Vancouver testing Edmonstone once again, but the Blazers netminder stayed composed and in control.
Kamloops took a more structured, defensive approach to open the third, limiting Vancouver’s shot volume. The game settled into a cruise-control rhythm as both teams traded chances without generating sustained pressure.
The Blazers would put the game away mid way through the third when Tymchak sprung Hurlbert on a breakaway. Hurlbert buried it for his 36th goal of the season, extending the lead to 5-0. Kamloops closed things out from there, as Edmonstone turned aside everything he faced to record his fourth shutout of the season, capping off a commanding 5-0 victory.
Next up: The Blazers open the weekend with a back-to back set against the Prince George Cougars, Friday in PG and Saturday in Kamloops. Then the Victoria Royals visit the city for a 2:00 matinee game on Family Day.
