The Kamloops Blazers rolled into Saskatoon on Saturday night looking to bounce back and find the win column after Friday’s tough loss to the Prince Albert Raiders.
The Blades wasted little time setting the tone. 4:30 into the first period Jordan Martin found an open lane above the hash marks and beat Logan Edmonstone to make it 1-0. Kamloops nearly responded when defenceman Joaquin Geras worked the blueline, firing a point shot that was redirected by Cooper Moore but couldn’t beat Blades goalie Evan Gardner.
Saksatoon doubled their lead when Zach Olsen’s shot slipped past Edmonstone to make it 2-0. The Blades continued to apply pressure and David Lewandowski extended the lead to 3-0, scoring his fourth of the season.
Kamloops generated chances early in the second period, as they chipped away trying to get on the board to cut the deficit. Kamloops’ penalty kill, which entered the night ranked sixth in the WHL at 83.3%, came up with another strong effort to keep the game within reach. Blazers’ forward Josh Evaschesen created a high-danger opportunity and had one of the best chances of the night to find the back of the net, but he was stopped by Gardner.
On the ensuing powerplay, Kamloops poured on the pressure with a flurry of shots from JP Hurlbert and Tommy Lafreniere, but Gardner continued to close the door as the Blades maintained control heading into the third period.
The Blades came out pouncing to start the third, keeping Edmonstone busy early as the Kamloops netminder turned aside a pair of high-quality chances to keep his team within striking distance. Olsen looked to extend the Blades lead and score his second of the night but was shutdown by Edmonstone once again who stood tall between the pipes.
Down the other end, Evan Markel found himself with an open lane but couldn’t beat Gardner. Hurlbert had plenty of chances but when you’re a star player and leading the league in points the opposition will be all over you. Still, Hurlbert generated multiple chances for the Blazers. Kamloops couldn’t solve Gardner as the Blades hold on for a 3-0 victory.
Kamloops will head to Regina for a matchup against the Pats on Thanksgiving Monday.
