The Kamloops Blazers faced off against Maddox Schultz and the Regina Pats in a Thanksgiving Monday matinee.
The first period got off to a quick start as both teams developed chances through the first five minutes trying to get their club on the scoreboard first. Kamloops killed off a penalty with dangerous chances from the Pats, but Logan Edmonstone stood tall between the pipes.
Kamloops broke through first, as Chicago Blackhawks prospect Nathan Behm fired home a one-timer feed from JP Hurlbert that beat Pats goaltender Kelton Pyne. Edmonstone then came up with a big glove save on Julien Maze following a Blazers turnover in the offensive zone to keep the game at 1-0. Edmonstone’s poise in the first period was a key factor.
Tommy Lafreniere opened the scoring in the second frame for Kamloops, giving the Blazers a quick 2–0 advantage as the period began to open up. The play started with sustained pressure in the Regina zone, and Lafreniere jumped on a loose puck in front to double the lead just minutes into the period. That cushion wouldn’t last long as Maze found space off the rush and snapped a shot past Edmonstone to cut the deficit in half.
From there, the pace ramped up with both team trading quality chances. The Pats began to get momentum, but Edmonstone was rock solid keeping Kamloops in front. Jordan Keller then had a glorious opportunity to extend the lead but Pyne robbed him on the doorstep. Despite the push from Regina, the Blazers held firm defensively and carried their one-goal lead into the third period.
Regina held control of the opening few minutes of the third. The Blazers struggled to get the puck out of their zone and the pressure eventually paid off when Schultz found Zachary Lansard down low in the grimy area, where he beat Edmonstone to tie the game at two.
The goal sparked some urgency from Kamloops and Hurlbert looked determined to get the go ahead goal dangling through multiple Pats’ players, generating chances, but couldn’t connect. Regina capitalized moments later as Caden Brown pounced on a loose puck in front and shoveled it past Edmonstone, giving the Pats their first lead of the afternoon.
Keller then found himself on a two-on-one with Hurlbert but couldn’t solve Pyne. With 2:02 remaining, Edmonstone went to the bench for the extra man and the 6-on-5 paid off. Keller ripped home a goal from Behm to tie the game at three, forcing overtime.
Both Kamloops and Regina played their first overtime of the 2025/26 WHL season. Lafreniere was tenacious through the opening couple minutes, drawing a penalty and giving Kamloops a man advantage.
On the powerplay it was Hurlbert, setting up Lafreniere for his second of the night and the overtime winner. Kamloops picks up a much needed win and snaps a four game losing streak.
