The Kamloops Blazers and Prince George Cougars squared off Friday night in the first of back-to back games this weekend.
The first opened with a steady pace of play through the first five minutes before the Cougars cycled the puck and tested Logan Edmonstone with a few shots. Blazers defenceman Madden Tymchak then set the tone with a heavy hit, energizing the Blazers early.
The Cougars struck first when Brock Souch buried a power-play opportunity just past the midway mark of the opening frame to make it 1-0. Kamloops began to generate some offensive rhythm and Isa Guram had the best chance to tie the game, but rang it off the crossbar.
Prince George doubled their lead just over a minute into the second period when Terik Parascak beat Edmonstone to make it 2-0. Harrison Brunicke drove the play before sliding a pass over to Vit Zahejsky, who hammered a one-timer past Josh Ravensbergen to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Prince George restored its two-goal cushion when Brock Souch netted his second of the night to make it 3-1. The Cougars then stretched the lead to three as Corbin Vaughan slipped one past Edmonstone to make it 4-1. Kamloops fought back within two late in the period when Jordan Keller drove the net and found Josh Evaschesen to make it 4-2 heading into the third.
The third period opened with plenty of physicality as Madden Tymchak and Tyrone Sobry dropped the gloves in a spirited tilt, bringing energy to the building.
Souch nearly completed the hat trick soon after, but Edmonstone came up with a big save to keep it a three-goal game. Prince George would then strike, Jett Lajoie found the back of the net to make it 5-2. The Blazers earned their first power play of the night late in the period but were unable to capitalize. Prince George shut the door the rest of the way, skating to a 5-2 victory.
Next up: The Blazers will host the Cougars on Saturday before a 2:00 P.M. matinee game against the Victoria Royals on Monday.
