The Kamloops Blazers hosted the Prince George Cougars Saturday night.
The first period opened with pace as both teams sized each other up, Blazers netminder Logan Edmonstone would make a stellar stop, just under a minute in on a one-time opportunity from Brock Souch. The physicality ramped up shortly after, beginning with Vit Zahejsky finishing a hard check along the boards.
Moments later, Cougars forward Aiden Foster delivered a heavy hit on Joaquin Geras, resulting in a penalty. On the ensuing powerplay, the Blazers would capitalize, as Nathan Behm took a slick feed from J.P. Hurlbert, beat the defender and roofed it on Ravensbergen to open the scoring 1-0. Kamloops wasn’t done yet, on another man advantage, Tommy Lafreniere jumped on a rebound and buried it to extend the Blazers lead to 2-0.
The physicality continued into the second, when Cougars forward Jett Lajoie hammered Blazers’ defenceman Dryden Deobald into the boards, resulting in a 5-minute major for charging. Despite several quality looks on the extended poweprlay, Kamloops was unable to solve Ravensbergen.
Prince George would respond shortly after, as Terik Parascak corralled his win rebound and fired it past Edmonstone, cutting the Blazers’ lead to one.
Prince George came out flying to open the third, as Carson Carels ripped a shot past Edmonstone early in the frame to tie the game at 2-2. The pace stayed high as Kamloops and Prince George continued to trade chances.
The Blazers would strike with just under five minutes remaining, as Hurlbert was sprung on a breakaway and buried it past Ravensbergen to give Kamloops a 3-2 lead. With just under 3:00 remaining, Prince George pulled their goalie and Carels struck again, tying the game at 3-3, sending it to overtime.
In overtime, Kooper Gizowski would seal it for the Cougars.
