Getting to Know Owen Cooper

After a few weeks with the Kamloops Blazers, forward Owen Cooper is feeling right at home.
Kamloops acquired Cooper from the Everett Silvertips last month in exchange for a seventh round pick.
In 11 games with the club, the 17-year-old has tallied two goals.
The adjustment from Everett to Kamloops has been smooth thanks to teammates, coaches and staff. “The guys are really good,” Cooper said. “They helped me with the switch for sure. They’ve been really welcoming, and the coaches have helped me get used to the systems and everything. It’s a great city too.”
Cooper describes himself as a fast, intelligent player who can impact the game in all three zones. “I’d say I’m a fast-paced player with really good hockey IQ who can also play a 200-foot game,” he said.
While he admits to being “somewhat superstitious,” his rituals are simple, always putting on his right gear first.
Growing up, the Calgary native’s favourite players were Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid and Tampa Bay Lightning forward Brayden Point. Cooper models his game after Point. “I feel like I model my game after Brayden Point. He plays the same way, a little on the smaller side, and uses his speed and work ethic,” Cooper said.
For Cooper though, his size has never been a limitation, it’s been motivation. “I just use my speed to my advantage,” he said. “That’s one of my biggest skills. As long as I’m working hard, I can have success.”
