For Kamloops Blazers draft pick Mateo Ferreria, stepping onto the ice at prospects camp was a whirlwind—but one he wouldn’t trade for anything.
“It was fast-paced hockey for sure,” Ferreria said after his first session. “But it just feels awesome to be part of such a great organization. Just being here feels great.” The highly skilled blueliner was one of the newest additions to the Blazers’ prospect pool. Ferreira was selected by the Blazers in the 1st round, 11th overall, in the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft. His excitement about joining the franchise was clear from the moment he got the call.
“We were just watching on TV,” Ferreria recalled, describing the moment he was drafted. “When my name got called, we all jumped up. We were so excited. My family was there, my agent called—it was just an awesome moment.”
Ferreria brings a dynamic skillset to the ice, but when asked to identify the trait he’s most eager to showcase, his answer came without hesitation.
“My skating,” he said. “That’s probably one of the best parts of my game. I want to show off my edges and my speed out there.” “We’ve had the ability to track and watch Mateo a lot over the last few seasons. We look forward to watching Mateo’s game continue to grow and develop, and are excited for the day he is a full-time player with the Kamloops Blazers,” said General Manager / Head Coach Shaun Clouston. Ferreria notched 21 goals, 49 assists and 70 points in 32 games last season.
Though just beginning his WHL journey, Ferreria already has a clear picture of the kind of player he wants to become, and the standard he’s aiming for is high.
“I really like Cale Makar,” he said. “I think I play similar to him, and I try to replicate the stuff he does.”
It’s lofty praise, but if Ferreria’s skating and poise continue to shine, he could be on his way to becoming a cornerstone on the Blazers’ future blueline.
