Pair of Blades prospects performing at 2024 WHL Cup
Calgary, AB – A pair of Saskatoon Blades prospects will compete at the 2024 WHL Cup later this month at the Peavey Mart Centrium in Red Deer, AB. The WHL announced Monday 15-year-old forward Jaggar John will represent Team Alberta, while fellow 2009-born forward Cohen Lewko will play for Team Manitoba.
John is off to a torrent start with the Canadian Sport School Hockey League’s (CSSHL) OHA Edmonton U17 Prep squad. The Fort McMurray, AB native is averaging more than two points-per-game with four goals and 11 assists in seven games. The 5-foot-8 speedster was drafted by the Blades in the third round (61st overall) of the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft. John’s 20 goals and 18 assists in 27 games last season with Northern Alberta Xtreme U15 Prep (NAX) of the CSSHL put him on the map. John led the playoffs in scoring by a wide margin with nine goals and ten assists in five appearances, and helped Team Alberta Blue win the 2024 Alberta Cup, dishing three helpers in five games at the tournament.
Lewko’s let out his inner playmaker to start the season with the CSSHL’s RINK HA Winnipeg U18 Prep squad, dishing six helpers in four games. The Sanford, MB product was drafted by the Blades in the fourth round (77th overall) of the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft. The 5-foot-11 forward lit the lamp 19 times and assisted 23 times in 26 games in U15 last season. Lewko tacked on 26 penalty minutes during the regular season and added one goal and two assists in four playoff games.
The 2024 WHL Cup will showcase the top 2009-born players from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Established in 2009, the tournament is held every season except in years when the Canada Winter Games are contested, and is the first step in Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence for players.
