Tonight
The Saskatoon Blades (4-1-1-0) welcome the Spokane Chiefs (6-1-0-0) to SaskTel Centre for the first time since Dec. 16, 2022. The Blue and Gold walked away that evening with an 8-5 victory and have won two in a row against the Chiefs after a 2-0 win south of the border last season.
Tonight’s the second homecoming for Saskatoon native Berkly Catton in his WHL career. The Seattle Kraken prospect had a goal and an assist in the 8-5 loss to the Blades two years ago during his rookie season. The Chiefs’ first overall pick of the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft has one goal and five assists in five games this season.
Saskatoon hopes to shake off back-to-back losses last weekend. First was a 6-3 defeat Friday, Oct. 4 at InnovationPlex against the Swift Current Broncos, followed by a 5-4 overtime loss to the Everett Silvertips on home ice.
Who to Watch
Nashville Predators prospect Tanner Molendyk and 20-year-old sniper Brandon Lisowsky are expected to make their season debut tonight. Molendyk was away from the beginning of September for Predators rookie and main camp, as well as preseason action. The McBride, BC product set a career-high in goals (10), assists (46), and points (56) in 56 games last season. Lisowsky returned from time with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Marlies. The 5-foot-9 winger netted a career-high 42 goals and 80 points in 68 games last season. The Blades hot start has them in first place of the Eastern Conference, and the return of Lisowsky and Molendyk will be an added boost.
Rookie forward Cooper Williams was named WHL Rookie of the Week on Monday. The 2008-born centre continued his impressive early-season run with three goals, an assist, and a +3 rating through three matches last week. Williams is on a career-opening six-game points streak with four goals and five assists in six games this season. The Calgary, AB product was drafted in the second round (41st overall) by the organization in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft.
