Tonight’s the first of four meetings this season between the Blades and Rebels. The Blades swept the season series last year and outscored the visitors 18-11.
Saskatoon swept last weekend’s home-and-home series against the Prince Albert Raiders (2-3-0-0). The Blades downed the Raiders 3-2 on the road at the Art Hauser Centre a week ago and followed up with a 5-2 victory at the Go Merlin Ford Lincoln Home Opener on Saturday.
Blades Head Coach Dan DaSilva the biggest emphasis at practice this week is to get right back to work.
“Last weekend was great, but it’s last weekend now. (Our) focus has completely shifted to tonight, and that’s what we did this week in terms of preparation. We were back to work on Monday off-ice and on the ice, pushing the guys in the gym and at practice, because you don’t just get to win every weekend. Red Deer isn’t just going to come in here and let us have it.”
One player whose effort paid off was 2007-born forward Konstantin Hutzinger. The Wels, AUT product signed a Western Hockey League (WHL) Scholarship and Development Agreement on Thursday with the Blue and Gold. The 5-foot-7 winger attended Blades Training Camp as an unsigned player under the team’s 50-player protected list.
“I’m so happy to be here and very honoured to be with this great organization,” said Hutzinger.
“He’s fit in so well with us,” said DaSilva. “We need to have guys like that, (who) can provide depth-scoring at times, a guy who is pushing for more minutes, pushing the top-six every day so that they’re at there best, so we have that internal competition.”
The Blades boast three of the Western Hockey League’s (WHL) top four scorers. 20-year-old forward Hunter Laing sits atop the scoring race with nine points (5G, 4A) in four games. Newly minted Blades captain Brayden Klimpke is tied for second place alongside Prince Albert’s Ben Harvey with eight points (3G, 5A). The Montreal Canadiens draft pick leads all WHL defencemen in scoring entering tonight’s contest. Rounding out the podium tied for third is Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick Cooper Williams. The 18-year-old forward has a goal and six assists for seven points through the start of the campaign.
10,000+ fans are expected to pack SaskTel Centre for tonight’s tilt. Five of Saskatoon’s next six games are inside SaskTel Centre, the lone road game coming on Friday, Oct. 16 at InnovationPlex against the Swift Current Broncos.
“We want SaskTel Centre to be feared as a tough place to come in and play,” said DaSilva. “So, we definitely want to make the most out of our home games that we have coming up and establish home ice as a place nobody wants to come into.”
Fans are encouraged to purchase their tickets ASAP to snag their desired seat.
