Tonight
The Saskatoon Blades (26-16-3-3) hunt their fourth straight win as they welcome the Regina Pats (14-29-4-2) to SaskTel Centre.
Saskatoon comes into tonight after a long night of travel back from Brandon. They didn’t return empty-handed as the Bridge City Bunch defeated the Wheat Kings 3-2 in overtime, putting them tied with the Prince Albert Raiders for first place in the East Division with 58 points.
Tonight’s the fourth of six meetings between Saskatchewan’s two largest cities. The Blue and Gold hold a 2-1 season series lead, outscoring Regina 12-9.
Who to Watch
Rookie forward Cooper Williams recorded a goal and an assist in yesterday’s win against Brandon. The 16-year-old centre scored the game-winning goal with 18 seconds left in overtime. The Blades’ second pick of the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft leads the team in rookie scoring with 15 goals and 20 assists in 48 games this season. Williams has a pair of goals and assists in his last three games.
2006-born forward Willy James snapped a 13-game goalless drought last night against Brandon. The 6-foot winger tied the game 1-1 for Saskatoon early in the second period with his fifth goal of the season. James cracked NHL Central Scouting’s preliminary rankings at the beginning of the year and has gone on to score 11 points in 32 games.
6-foot-4 netminder Ethan McCallum was sensational in his hometown game last night at Westoba Place. The 18-year-old goalie stopped 39 of 41 Wheat King shots to pick up his third victory in his last four starts. McCallum is now 5-5-0-2 on the year with a 3.19 goals against average and a .896 save percentage.
